ALBANY, N.Y. – The Princeton University field hockey team fell to 3-5 on the season following a hard-fought 2-0 loss to No. 12 University at Albany on Alumni Turf Field.
Breaking a scoreless deadlock in the latter stages of the second half, Fiori Van Rijswijk netted the game winner at 64:00 before Paula Heuser tacked on a score with a successful penalty stroke just 3:44 later. Snapping the Tigers' three-game win streak, Albany (7-2) picked up its first-ever victory over Princeton, having previously dropped match-ups in 2005 (3-0), 2008 (6-3) and 2013 (5-3).
With the Great Danes recording a pair of shots in the game's first six minutes, Princeton generated a scoring opportunity of its own in the 19th minute. Hailey Reeves inserted a penalty corner to Kate Ferrara, who set up a long Sydney Kirby shot from the top of the circle that prompted a Maxi Primus save. In the 23rd minute, Maddie Copeland narrowly missed on a chance to put Princeton on the board, testing Primus with a couple of close range shots from the right post.
Continuing to apply pressure, Kirby almost came up with the go-ahead goal in the 33rd minute. Receiving another Reeves insert at the top of the circle, the senior tri-captain dribbled it to her right before rattling a shot off of the near post. Princeton earned two more penalty corners in the half's final moments, but could not put a try on target as the teams headed into the intermission scoreless.
With neither team able to maintain possession in the attacking third for much of the second half, Albany's Anna Bottino registered the frame's first shot at 49:05, sending a try wide of the Tiger cage. Carrying the ball into the circle, Allison Evans looked to put Princeton's first shot of the period on goal, but the Great Dane defense blocked down the attempt before it could threaten the Albany net.
Earning a second consecutive penalty corner with just 6:10 to play, the home team broke through. Getting the play started, Van Rijswijk inserted it to the top of the circle. Making her way to the front of the Princeton cage, Van Rijswijk quickly got to a rebound, tipping it in at 64:00. With just over two minutes remaining in regulation, Albany added an insurance goal with Heuser successfully converting a penalty stroke.
Albany finished with a 10-5 shot advantage while Princeton held a 4-2 edge in penalty corners. Anya Gersoff made five saves for the Tigers, while Primus had three stops.
