CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (1/26/15) - Sophomore Kelsey Koelzer and Morgan Sly each scored but Princeton came up a bit short in a 4-2 loss at No. 1 Boston College on Monday afternoon at Kelley Rink.
The Tigers hit the ice for the first time in two weeks, after hitting the books for fall semester final exams.
The undefeated Eagles, who have held the No. 1 ranking since November, held a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period as Princeton limited the team to just seven shots on goal.
Kate Leary scored her first of two goals at 5:50 when she stick handled around Princeton goaltender Kimberly Newell and popped the puck in between Newell and the right pipe.
Koelzer converted on Princeton's first power-play opportunity just 14 seconds into the man-advantage, with help from sophomores Cassidy Tucker and Molly Contini. Koelzer snipped the puck after playing catch with Tucker. It was Contini that tried to put away a shot off a face off win by McDonell, but the puck deflected into the corner where it was picked up by Tucker.
The nation's leading scorer Alex Carpter scored two more goals to her season total and regained the lead for the Eagles. Both her goals came because of her positioning at the back door. Leary added the team's fourth goal with five seconds remaining in the second half after a scramble left her open at the left post.
Princeton's two goals were the most goals allowed by BC by a non-conference for since Harvard's 10-2 loss in November. BC entered the game with a third-best scoring defense in the nation, at 1.08 gpg.
Sly added her fourth goal of the season with help from Kiersten Falck, the only tally of the third period as Princeton converted on its second consecutive power-play opportunity of the game. Falck whipped in a shot from the left point that was redirected by Sly on the doorstep.
Princeton had two bouts of 5x3 action and had at least a player advantage for 2:11 with the Eagles getting penalizted three times. The Tigers smothered netminder Katie Burt but she turned away every shot she faced.
Burt finished the game with 13 saves as BC ends Princeton's 17-year unbeaten streak in its first game back from exam break.
Princeton's two goals is the most goals BC has allowed a non-conference team to score since November, when Harvard scored twice and lost 10-2.
Newell made 27 saves in Princeton's final non-conference game of the season.
Princeton hosts Dartmouth and Harvard this weekend, Jan. 30 & 31 at Hobey Baker Rink.
