Boston College had allowed four goals three times this season entering Saturday night's NCAA tournament opener at Roberts Stadium. Two of those times were to top-three ranked opponents Stanford and Virginia. But four goals were what Princeton came away with, one more than the Tigers needed, it turned out, to advance. Princeton's 4-2 win over Boston College puts the Tigers in the NCAA Round of 32 for the second time in four years, although unlike in 2012 when the bracket sent Princeton to Utah, a plane won't be required this time. The Tigers will face USC, a shootout winner over Cal State Fullerton in the first round, on Virginia's home field. The winner will then face the winner between Virginia and UNC Wilmington. The Princeton-USC game will take place Friday at a time to be announced. Mimi Asom opened the scoring by heading home an Emily Sura corner kick in the 23rd minute, and then she gave Princeton a 2-0 lead when she took another pass from Sura, wheeled and unleashed a rocket into the net. The goals tied Asom with Linda DeBoer '86 for the freshman record for goals in a season with 12. Princeton's two-goal lead lasted 90 seconds before BC's leading scorer, McKenzie Meehan, got her own rebound and knocked it in to pull the Eagles within 2-1 in the 37th minute, but even that margin stayed only until Tyler Lussi fired home a loose ball from 25 yards out to restore the two-goal lead at 3-1 less than four minutes before the break. Lussi struck again when she headed in a corner in the 50th minute, and Princeton's three goal advantage remained until BC's Lauren Berman knocked in a loose ball with 1:02 left. |
| Game Notes |
|
• The NCAA tournament win was Princeton's eighth in program history and first since the Tigers won at West Virginia in the 2012 first round. • Princeton is now 7-2 in the NCAA tournament at home and has won its last five since Rutgers won a second-round game at Lourie-Love Field in 2001. Boston College was the only other team to beat Princeton in the tournament at home, back in 1983. • Mimi Asom and Linda DeBoer '86 now share the record for goals in a season by a freshman, with 12. • Tyler Lussi's two goals give her 43 for her career, four back of Esmeralda Negron '05 for the program record. • Emily Sura had three assists to nearly double her career total of four coming into the game. It was the senior co-captain's first multi-assist game of her career. • Head coach Sean Driscoll won his first appearance in the NCAA tournament as a coach or player. He's the first coach in program history to take the team to the NCAA tournament in his first year on the job, and he's now the first coach in program history to win an NCAA tournament game in his first year. • Princeton and USC have never met in women's soccer. |
