BOX SCORE
PRINCETON, N.J. (12/11/15) - Princeton women's hockey team continued to struggle on the power play in tonight's 4-0 win over visiting Penn State tonight at Baker Rink. But the way the Tigers are playing defensively and generating scoring chances that is about the only thing not clicking right now.
Princeton held its opponent to one goal or less for the fifth straight game in stretching its win streak to five, receiving goals from four different players. Senior Jaimie McDonell had three assists and has seven for the year, second only to leading scorer Karlie Lund who has nine tallies.
The ECAC Goalie of the Week Kimberly Newell, stopped all 22 shots from the Nittany Lions in recording her second shutout of the season and seventh of her career.
Following a scoreless first period in which the Tigers outshot Penn State, 13-5, Princeton got on the board with 9:27 left in the second. Junior Molly Contini was credited with her fourth goal of the season when McDonnell's shot from the slot deflected off Contini's leg and past Nittany Lions' goalie Hannah Ehresmann.
The Tigers dominated play through two periods, outshooting Penn State, 29-13, but Ehresmann recorded 28 of her 38 saves through two to keep the margin at one goal.
Princeton stretched the lead to 2-0 just 1:39 into the third when junior Cassidy Tucker scored her fifth goal of the year on a breakaway. McDonnell connected with a long pass to the junior before heading off the ice and received the lone assist while not being on the ice when the goal was scored.
Junior defenseman Kelsey Koelzer, who led the Tigers with 10 shots on goal, scored her seventh goal of the season with 11:10 left to make it 3-0.
Junior Fiona McKenna had a dominant game on both ends of the ice and scored the game's final goal on another breakaway with 9:49 to play. Sophomore Emily Achterkirch had the lone assist on the play when she banked an indirect pass of the boards to spring McKenna.
The Tigers' power play woes were the only blemish in what was a complete team effort; with several players seeing more ice time than usual.
Princeton was 0-for-4 with the man-advantage despite seven shots on goal and some excellent opportunities.
With the win Newell is now 8-3-1 on the season while the Tigers raised their record to 10-4-1 with the non-conference win. Penn State, which competes in College Hockey America, is now 4-10-4 on the season. Ehresmann is 1-5-0 as a sophomore.
The two team's meet again tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Hobey Baker Rink in the final game for both teams in 2015.
Princeton returns to action on New Year's night with a home ECAC Hockey conference game against Brown while Penn State will play the first of two non-conference games at Ohio State the next night.
