CANTON, N.Y. (2/14/15) - Princeton wasn't making the long trip up to the North Country to not come home with any points. And with three minutes on the visit, left the Tigers made sure of it, scoring three goals to upend St. Lawrence 4-2.
Tied 1-1 with St. Lawrence entering the third period, the Saints grabbed the lead at 9:40 and with time winding down the Tigers put on an offensive show at Appleton Arena, netting three goals in the final four minutes to take a 4-2 win.
Hilary Lloyd, who was itching to get a goal all evening, finally broke Carmen McDonald with 3:09 remaining to tie the game at 2-2. Cristin Shanahan tallied the game-winning goal at 19:06 and Kelsey Koelzer added the insurance empty-net goal at 19:40.
"Against Clarkson, we didn't play well but we still had a chance to tie it in the end," Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal said. "Today's game against St. Lawrence was a test to see how we would rebound. We battled for 60 minutes and were fortunate to score three late goals. I am proud of our team and proud that they compete for 60 minutes. They have heart."
After Dartmouth's win over Cornell today, the Ivy League race comes down to Princeton and Harvard. The Tigers hold destiny in its hands with everything coming down to the Yale and Brown games next weekend. Harvard has completed its Ivy schedule and has 16 points, while Princeton has two games left and 13 points. If Princeton can sweep Yale and Brown it will win the title outright, and will be Princeton's first since 2006. A win and a tie with get them a share of the title with Harvard. Anything less leaves Princeton as the runner up.
"The team knows the importance of next weekend," Kampersal said. "We will prepare the same and work on improving ourselves. We will break the areas of our game down that need improvement and try to get better. The players have very good focus and prepare well. We're looking forward to a good week of practice."
The Saints took an early lead at 4:42 when Kaya Raniwsky capitalized on a juicy rebound on a shot from Jenna Marks. Junior Kimberly Newell was splayed out making the original stop and Raniwsky was able to pop in the loose puck.
Senior Brianna Leahy scored her fifth goal of the season at 15:07 to knot the game at 1-1. The goal came just 13 seconds after a Princeton power play, as the Tigers took advantage of a jumbled Saints lineup. Ali Pankowski took a number of drives at the net during the power play but it was classmate Leahy that able to get past netminder Carmen MacDonald, whacking in a Morgan Sly rebound.
The teams played a scoreless second period that saw a lot of open ice as the Tigers were called for four penalties and St. Lawrence one.
A Brooke Webster breakaway turned into a goal despite Webster being stuffed by Newell on the 1x1. The Saints got the puck in the corner and circled around with Kennedy Marchment tallying the go-ahead goal at 9:40.
Lloyd, who had been chipping away at MacDonald all game, finally snuck one by the netminder with the equalizer with 3:09 to play after a give-and-go with Molly Contini. The quick transition goal came just after St. Lawrence had hit the post on the opposite end.
Just as the announcer could be heard addressing the crowd with "one minute remaining" Princeton Kiersten Falck had collected the puck in front of the St. Lawrence bench and skated down in the corner before releasing a centering pass to Shanahan who was open in the slot for the game-winning goal with 54 seconds remaining.
St. Lawrence pulled MacDonald for the extra skater but a turnover by Kailee Heidersbach, who incidently received the first star the game in St. Lawrence's win over Princeton in November, led to Princeton getting possesson and Koelzer iced the win with the empty-net goal. Koelzer ranks second nationally in points per game for a defender, now averaging 0.96 points per game (26 points in 27 games).
Newell made 38 saves as Princeton improves to 14-11-2 and 12-7-1 in the ECAC. MacDonald stopped 16 shots for St. Lawrence.
Princeton was 0 for 1 on the power play and a perfect 6 for 6 on the penalty kill.
