HAMDEN, Conn. (2/28/15) - The Princeton women's hockey lost a hard-fought battle with No. 6 Quinnipiac in Game 2 of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals, 2-0. Down 1-0 the Tigers pulled netminder Kimberly Newell, who made 34 saves in the game, to try to get the equalizer. With just 12.0 seconds left hopes of the goal, a game three and continuation of the postseason were over for the Tigers as Quinnipiac scored an empty-net goal.
The first period of today's game was a vast improvement from yesterday's. The Tigers displayed a physical forecheck and the defense returned to putting up a big number of blocks in front of Newell, who brought her A game today.
A scoreless first period came after the officials had to go to video review after one referee signaled a Quinnipiac goal. Junior Jaimie McDonell cleared the puck off the line and it was clear to the fans in the building from the overhead cam it was no good. After checking out the video themselves, the officials agreed.
Newell made the save of the night on Quinnipiac's first power play less than three minutes in the second period. Crouching low at the left pipe, the puck squirted to the right where Shiann Darkangelo had a wide open net. Newell's reflexes were impressive, jutting out her left leg to make an unbelievable toe save.
With just nine seconds left on the power play however, Nicole Connery broke the stalemate and ended Newell's clean sheet. Taylar Cianfarano and Emma Woods assisted on the power-play goal.
The Bobcats continued to control the play in the second until they were delivered their first penalty of the game and the Tigers sprang back to life. The Orange & Black put two shots on goal and two more blocked and it gave the Tigers the confidence it needed.
Newell continued her all-star game on the other end. After taking a Woods puck to the mask, she stood tall again as the Tigers took a checking penalty midway though the middle frame. Woods had a few whacks at the puck on the doorstep and Newell came up with a great sliding stop to the opposite post during the final second of the Tigers kill.
The third period was a balanced one with each team taking six shots but Princeton couldn't get the goal to match Quinnipiac. With two minutes remaining the Tigers put the extra skater on the ice, but the Bobcats trapped and dumped and finally the Tigers got a shot on goal as McDonell sent one in. Laden lost track of it but the Tigers couldn't capitalize as the whistle was blown with 25.8 seconds left. Kelsey Koelzer managed one more shot on goal before Quinnipiac got puck. McDonell tried to tie up Nicole Brown in along the right boards but Brown got her stick on the puck and found the empty net with 12 ticks remaining.
Laden earned her 16th shutout of the season with 16 saves.
Quinnipiac, now 26-7-3, advances to the semifinals of the ECAC Hockey Tournament next weekend
Princeton concludes its season with a 15-14-2 overall record, a 13-8-1 ECAC mark and a 7-2-1 record in the Ivy League.
