Baseball Wraps Up Series Against Maryland; Prepares For Two-Game Set at ECU

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Princeton University baseball team wrapped up a three-game set with No. 16 Maryland with a 13-6 loss at Bob “Turtle” Smith Stadium.
Unable to hold onto a 2-1 lead, the Tigers surrendered a run in all but one inning, with Maryland racking up 15 hits. Nick Cieri went 2-for-4 for the Terrapins with two RBI, while Anthony Papio was also 2-for-4 with a homer. Brandon Lowe, Kevin Smith and Kevin Martir each recorded two hits, while combining for a pair of RBI and five runs scored.
Nick Hernandez finished 3-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Andres Larramendi was 2-for-5 with an RBI. Danny Hoy, Peter Owens, Tyler Servais and Danny Baer accounted for the rest of Princeton's nine hits.
Nick Brady fell to 0-2 on the season after giving up six runs on seven hits in five innings of work. Tyler Foote allowed five runs on five hits in 2.0 innings, while Kevin Thomsen gave up two runs on three hits.
Bobby Ruse improved to 4-0 on the season after surrendering just two runs on two hits in 5.0 innings with eight strikeouts. Tayler Stiles, Zach Morris and Robert Galligan combined for 2.1 shutout innings in relief, giving up just one hit.
Down 1-0 in the top of the third, Princeton plated its first runs of the series. Baer got the rally started by drawing a one-out walk before stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. After Billy Arendt got a free pass to put runners on the corners, Hoy legged out an infield single, allowing Baer to score. With Princeton later loading the bases, Hernandez lifted a sacrifice that brought in Arendt.
The Terrapins responded by tying the game in the bottom of the frame before taking a 3-2 lead with another run in the bottom of the fourth. Down 6-2 after a three-run Maryland fifth, the Tigers got one back in the top of the sixth on a two-out Larramendi RBI single to center.
The Terrapins once again answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning before tacking on three more in the seventh and eighth. Princeton closed out the scoring in the ninth with three runs on a Hernandez RBI single, a wild pitch and an Owens base-knock to left.
NO REST FOR THE WEARY
• With the schedule changes over the weekend, Princeton will have a quick turnaround, as it travels to ECU tomorrow to open a two-game set.
• As a team, Princeton batted just .196 in three games against Maryland with a .261 on-base and .235 slugging percentage.
• The Tigers' pitching staff posted an 11.62 ERA against one of the nation's most potent offenses, with Terrapin hitters combining for a .337 batting average in the series.
• Nick Hernandez hit .500 (5-for-10) against Maryland with a double and RBI.
• Danny Hoy was 4-for-12 (.333) with a double and RBI.
• On the season, Princeton is hitting .261 as a team with a .426 on-base and .567 slugging percentage.
• Peter Owens is hitting a team-high .371 with a .436 OBP.
• Hoy is batting .350 on the year with a team-high four doubles and three home runs.
• Nick Hernandez (.324/.382/.395), Billy Arendt (.316/.474/.357) and Zack Belski (.306/.389/.419) are also off to fast starts this season.
SCOUTING EAST CAROLINA
• Princeton is 0-3 all-time against East Carolina.
• The Tigers dropped a pair of games to ECU in 1981 (L, 10-4/L, 1-0), while also falling in 1984 (L, 5-4).
• ECU carries a 13-6 overall record into the two-game series, having won four-straight over UNC-Greensboro and Elon.
• Junior Like Lowery was named the American Conference Hitter-of-the-Week after batting .500 with four home runs, 13 RBI and eight runs scored during a 4-1 stretch for ECU.
• Lowery leads the team with a .468 batting average, .565 OBP and 1.021 slugging percentage with eight homers, two doubles and 25 RBI.
• Bryce Harman is hitting .442 with a .551 OBP, 14 RBI and a team-high eight doubles.
