Princeton Holds Off Yale In Exciting Race Of Top-10 Boats For Eisenberg Cup
April 18, 2015 | Women's Rowing - Open
Yale took three of the five morning races, though almost each one of the morning was decided by less than four seconds. Princeton won both the varsity eight and second varsity eight contests, while Yale won both fours and added a victory in the third varsity eight.
"Yale is really strong team and it was a tough race," said senior captain Faith Richardson. "It was a fast course, but it was good to race in some different conditions. I think we are starting to tap into some real speed after a lot of hard work on the water so it was great to come back home with a win. That being said, we still have a lot of work to do as a team before Ivies."
It was an especially satisfying win for Princeton, which was racing for the first time this season away from Lake Carnegie. The varsity eight, whose only two losses this season have come to boats ranked in the Top 4, took its race in 6:08.9, while Yale suffered only its first loss of the season by a mere 1.4 seconds (6:10.3). Regardless of the result, both boats should be considered top challengers to Brown, which remains the only undefeated boat against Ivy League competition.
The second varsity race was also a close one, with the Tigers winning by just over three seconds in 6:18.9; Yale took second in 6:22.0. The fours were just as close, with Yale winning each by between 2.9 and 3.7 seconds.
The open women will head down to the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia next weekend to compete for the Class of 1984 Plaque against both Penn and Dartmouth.
"he Ivy League is extremely competitive right now and Brown is leading the charge," Richardson added. "We still have a long way to go as a team but hopefully by May we can give them a run for their money."
