Class of 1984 Plaque: Penn and Dartmouth
Open Women Close Ivy Regular Season With Wins Over Penn, Dartmouth
April 25, 2015 | Women's Rowing - Open
The eighth-ranked Princeton open rowing team wrapped up the Ivy League portion of its regular season in impressive fashion Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River. The Tigers won each race over Dartmouth and Penn to retain the Class of 1984 Plaque.
“It was good racing in very good conditions for this kind of spring,” head coach Lori Dauphiny said. “We were mixed in with some other Cup races, which was exciting. It was a bigger regatta than I realized.”
The Princeton races were mixed in with the Bergen Cup races on the Schuylkill River, which featured most of the Philadelphia programs outside of Penn. The Tigers took care of business against their Ivy rivals to retain the '84 Plaque, which goes to the team with the best combined finish in the V8, 2V8 and V4.
While each of those boats won, Dauphiny was very pleased by the entire Princeton performance.
“In general, the team is developing, and it's throughout the program,” she said. “The 3V did very well today, and we turned the 4V into two fours, and they did an outstanding job. Everybody was rallying and supporting one another.”
While Princeton will take on another nationally ranked opponent (USC) next Sunday during Senior Day on Lake Carnegie, this will be the final time the Tigers see an Ivy League team until the Ivy Championships May 17 on Cooper River. Brown has established itself as a strong favorite that day, but Dauphiny knows the entire league will be both fast and ready.
“The field is packed,” she said. “Yale did very well today, and Harvard is very strong. Within the league, Columbia hasn't raced as many Ivies, so it will be interesting to see where they are seeded. Dartmouth has only been on the water for a couple of weeks, so they will get stronger. I think the league will be tight.
“It's an awesome league, really fun to be part of,” Dauphiny added. “It's great to be racing such strong teams. It has really gotten us better.”
