VIDEO SERIES: BOAT NAMING l PREVIEW
Videographer Doug Myers continues his international trip with the Princeton heavyweights in England, where they are preparing for the prestigious Royal Henley Regatta, coming up next week. In the second video installment, the team talks about the magic of Henley, as well as the excitement of bringing three eights.
The first installment looked at the naming of the three rented boats, which was a tribute to the great Class of 1952, which had a historic showdown with a Navy boat that would go on to represent the United States at the Olympics.
The draw has been announced for Henley. Both the varsity eight and second varsity will compete in the Ladies' Challenge Plate Draw, which is the second-highest competition for men's boats at Henley. Among the most interesting first-round matchups in the field will come in that bracket, as the Tiger varsity eight will take on the five-time defending national champion Washington Huskies.
Those two boats met in the IRA grand final on Mercer Lake. Princeton finished third, its first IRA medal in nine years, but Washington was the dominant boat that day to remain atop the sport.
The Princeton 2V, which won gold at Sprints and took silver in a thriller with Washington at IRAs, will take on the Leander Club in the opening round. The Leander Club is one of the top rowing clubs in England.
The Princeton 3V will race for the Temple Cup, and will open against MIT. While the Ladies Plate features seven different crews, the Temple Cup has 32 boats in the field.
A racing schedule will be announced this week, so check back with GoPrincetonTigers.com for full coverage, including videos from England and a detailed history of Princeton at Henley.
