HANOVER, N.H. – The 20th-ranked Princeton University field hockey team opened its Ivy League schedule on Sunday afternoon with a decisive 7-3 victory over Dartmouth College.
Improving their overall record to 3-4, the Tigers moved to 27-7-2 all-time against Big Green, who fall to 3-4 (0-1 Ivy) on the year. Princeton's seven goals are the most since the Tigers earned a 7-1 decision over Dartmouth on Sept. 21, 2013.
Maddie Copeland matched a career-high by netting her second hat-trick in a week. Sophia Tornetta had a pair of goals, while Ryan McCarthy dished out two assists. Teresa Benvenuti collected a career-best four helpers. Cat Caro and Elizabeth George accounted for Princeton's other two scores.
Wasting little time getting on the board, Princeton opened up the scoring in the first minute of play. Pouncing on a Dartmouth turnover in their defensive zone, McCarthy dribbled the ball up the right side. Sending a ball into the middle of the circle, McCarthy found an unmarked Tornetta, who slotted a shot into the bottom left corner of the Big Green cage.
Continuing to push forward in the third minute, the Tigers quickly doubled their lead. Catching Dartmouth on a counter, Benvenuti played a long outlet to Copeland. Getting behind the Big Green backline, Copeland made good on a one-on-one chance against Dartmouth goalie Paige Duffy, netting a breakaway goal at 2:59.
Taking advantage of a penalty corner in the 10th minute, Copeland netted her second of the afternoon. Making a run to the back-post after a Tornetta insert, Copeland got a stick on a Benvenuti feed from the top of the circle, redirecting it past Duffy at 9:56. With just under 18 minutes to play in the half, Dartmouth broke through as Anna Ewasechko hammered home a rebound off a Rebecca Hu shot following a penalty corner to trim the Big Green deficit to 3-1.
Making the most of another penalty corner to start the second half, Dartmouth pulled within one. Ewasechko got the play started with the insert at 37:59. Redirecting a Hu shot, Julia Donald turned it into the back of the Princeton cage at 38:06.
Coming right back, the Tigers netted three unanswered goals in less than a minute. Once again linking up with Benvenuti, Copeland got things started with her third of the game at 40:10. Just 27 seconds later, McCarthy made a nice run before finding George to make it 4-2. Twenty-eight seconds after George's score, Caro capped off a flurry of action, netting her fourth of the season at 41:05 to push the Princeton lead to 6-2.
Looking for more in the 55th minute, the Tigers set up for another penalty corner. Earning a penalty stroke on the ensuing play, Princeton tacked onto its margin with a successful Tornetta try at 55:12. The Tigers finished with a 22-11 shot advantage and a 10-6 edge in penalty corners.
Princeton returns to action on Friday, Oct. 2 against Yale University.
