Wheatley Leads Princeton Past Yale 65-50 On "Play4Kay" Night
January 31, 2016 | Women's Basketball
It was festive early, when the fans coming into Jadwin Gym were dressed in pink shirts and hoo rags, snacking on cupcakes and cookies with pink frosting, as the Princeton women's basketball team hosted its annual "Play4Kay" breast cancer awareness game.
It was festive at the end, too, as Michelle Miller dribbled out the final 15 seconds of Princeton's 65-50 win over Yale and the crowd of 2,109 at Jadwin rose and roared its approval.
And in the middle, when it got a little shaky for awhile? It was Alex Wheatley who got the party started again.
Wheatley scored 12 of her 14 points in the third quarter - 10 of them consecutively - after Yale had cut what had been a 12-point Princeton lead to five at the half and then three in the third quarter.
By the time Wheatley's low-post clinic ended, Princeton was up by 11 at 52-41, on its way to a biggest lead of 18 and ultimately a 15-point victory.
The win completed a weekend sweep for Princeton, who is now 13-4 overall and 2-1 in the Ivy League. The Tigers will be at Dartmouth Friday and Harvard next Sunday.
GAME NOTES
* Wheatley scored six points in Friday's 72-53 win over Brown, and did so on six shots. She took only a single shot in the first half against Yale. After the game, Princeton head coach Courtney Banghart was asked if Wheatley had been the difference. "Yes," she said, as Annie Tarakchian sat next to her and nodded her head. "She had six shots against Brown, and that's not enough. She had one in the first half tonight, and that's not enough." Wheatley's barrage in the third quarter all came on moves near the basket, and she finished 7 for 9 from the field for 14 points, while also adding nine rebounds, all in 28 minutes.
* Wheatley came into the weekend with 953 career points, and her 20 points in the two nights leaves her with 973, or 27 away from becoming the 24th 1,000-point scorer in program history.
* Tarakchian's streak of consecutive games with 17 rebounds ended at two, but she did have eight more, along with 12 points.
* The two wins this weekend give Princeton 35 sweeps in the last 38 Ivy League weekends.
* Princeton had four players in double figures. In addition to Wheatley and Tarakchian, Vanessa Smith had 13 and Michelle Miller had 12.
* Princeton outrebounded Yale 41-27.
* Princeton shot 51% for the game while holding Yale to 32% shooting. Princeton was 23 for 37 from two-point range.
