Fighting to avoid its first Ivy League loss, the Princeton men's basketball team had double-digit deficits in each half but just couldn't close the gap against Yale, falling 79-75 Saturday night.
The win keeps Yale unbeaten at 4-0 in the Ivy and tied with Columbia, which won at Harvard. Princeton stands third at 2-1.
Yale made 14 of its first 17 shots and built a 28-16 lead before Princeton pulled within four and trailed the Bulldogs by six at the break, 38-32.
The second half featured another strong Yale start as the Bulldogs started the period on a 15-5 run to take a 16-point, 53-37 lead with 16 minutes left. Princeton trailed by 10 points with just less than four minutes to go, but whittled the deficit down to three on a Henry Caruso bucket with 86 seconds to go to make it 75-72.
From there, though, the comeback stalled. Makai Mason restored Yale's lead to six with a 3-pointer from the top of the key, and although Devin Cannady answered for Princeton with a banked 3-pointer to make it 78-75 with 50 seconds left, the Tigers couldn't capitalize after Yale's Anthony Dallier missed both free throws at the other end. Caruso's try at the rim didn't fall with 18 seconds left, and Dallier made 1 of 2 at the stripe to make it a four-point game and seal the win, 79-75.
Caruso had a game-high 26 points, just three off his career best, while Cannady came within two points of his career best to finish with 15. Amir Bell added 11 as the third Tiger in double figures. Mason led Yale with 22 points, with Brandon Sherrod adding 19 and Justin Sears getting a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards.
