Tigers Score Early, Top Dartmouth in Ivy Opener
October 01, 2016 | Women's Soccer
Abby Givens and Tyler Lussi had goals within the game's first eight minutes as the Princeton women's soccer team beat Dartmouth 2-0 in the team's Ivy League home opener Saturday afternoon at Roberts Stadium.
The win moves Princeton to 8-1-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the Ivy with four standings points. After Saturday's results, the Tigers stand in third place in the league with four points, two points behind 2-0 Harvard and Columbia.
Princeton outshot the Big Green 13-6 overall and 6-2 on goal. The shutout was rookie Natalie Grossi's third of the season, and the Tigers became the first team this season to score twice against the Big Green.
Givens' goal came in the sixth minute when Tyler Lussi passed along the sideline into the 18-yard box, and Givens redirected it past Dartmouth keeper Casey Cousineau. Just 102 seconds later, Jesse McDonough served a free kick from just in front of the midfield stripe into the box, and Lussi headed it home for the 2-0 lead.
Lussi's goal gives her 52 on her career, upping her program record and remaining in fourth place in Ivy history behind Harvard's Kelly Landry (68) and Sue St. Louis (66) and Brown's Theresa Hirschauer (62), all of whom played in the 1980s. With the assist, she now has 120 career points also extending her program record and moving her closer to fourth place in Ivy history behind Landry at 160, St. Louis at 148, Hirschauer at 131 and Penn's Katy Cross (2001-04) at 125.
The wins are Princeton's first back-to-back over Dartmouth since 2007 and 2008, and the Tigers are unbeaten in five straight at home against the Big Green since Dartmouth's last win in Princeton in 2006.
The Tigers will head to Lehigh for a Tuesday night non-league tilt at 7 p.m. before resuming the Ivy slate next Saturday against Brown (5-2-3, 1-1 Ivy) at 4 p.m. at Roberts Stadium.
