Caro Scores Twice as Princeton Overwhelms Columbia, 6-0
October 07, 2016 | Field Hockey
NEW YORK – Princeton registered its biggest goal total in over a year with a 6-0 victory over the Columbia Lions at the Baker Athletics Complex on Friday evening. Â
Â
Four different Tigers scored in the contest highlighted by senior Cat Caro's two tallies. The senior now has 16 points this season, surpassing her total from 2015. Junior Ryan McCarthy converted her eighth goal of the season, giving her a new career-high. Sophomore Jane Donio-Enscoe has cashed in on goals in the last two games for the Tigers. Freshmen Maddie Bacskai and Carlotta von Gierke added assists in the victory.
Â
It took just six minutes for the Tigers to get on the board as McCarthy stickhandled the ball into the circle and slapped a reverse shot into the back of the net. Two minutes later, the Lions looked to tie the contest, but Maeve Doherty's shot following a corner was wide.
Â
Senior Hailey Reeves deflected a shot by Bacskai off a corner past the Lions' goalie Kendall Kuntz in the 11th minute. Four minutes before halftime, Donio-Enscoe dribbled into the right corner and centered a pass to Caro, who quickly deposited it for her sixth tally of the season.
Â
Right out of intermission, Caro picked up a turnover in the circle and drilled the ball past Kuntz to put Princeton ahead, 4-0. The Tigers' offense didn't slow down as Donio-Enscoe touched Bacskai's attempt on a corner into the cage in the 42nd minute. Junior Lexi Quirk scored with five minutes remaining as she made quick work of a loose rebound.
Â
Columbia had a flurry of shots over the final minute, forcing sophomore Grace Baylis to make her only save of the night, but couldn't get on the scoreboard.
Â
Tonight was the most goals that Princeton have recorded since a 7-3 victory over Dartmouth last September. It was also the largest margin of victory against Columbia since Princeton won 8-0 in 2012. Head coach Carla Tagliente's team is now 7-4 on the season and 3-0 in the Ivy League and will host No. 2 Duke on Sunday (1 p.m.).
