No. 2 Duke Outlasts No. 12 Princeton In OT Thriller, 2-1
October 09, 2016 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – Alyssa Chillano scored on a penalty stroke nine minutes into overtime to give the No. 2 Duke Blue Devils a 2-1 victory over the No. 12 Princeton Tigers at Bedford Field on Sunday afternoon.
Â
It was a defensive battle in the first half of the contest as the two teams combined for just five shots and three penalty corners. Princeton's first scoring threat came in the 14th minute. Junior Ryan McCarthy went streaking down the right sideline and found sophomore Jane Donio-Enscoe. The sophomore couldn't corral the pass as Duke's goalie Sammi Steele knocked the ball away. Freshman Krista Hoffman had a chance at the loose ball, but couldn't get a handle on it.
Â
Duke made the most of its only corner in the first stanza. Margaux Paolino inserted the ball to Ashley Kristen, who stopped the pass for Alyssa Chillano. Chillano made quick work, blistering a shot by Grace Baylis for a 1-0 advantage.
Â
The Tigers opened up the second half with the first shot, but McCarthy's attempt was blocked. It wasn't until the 54th minute when sophomore Sophia Tornetta, returning from an injury, made her appearance count.
Â
The away team looked to quickly answer with back-to-back shots four minutes later, but both tries were off the mark. The Blue Devils had a final attempt in regulation blocked with 21 seconds left.
Â
In the extra session, senior Cat Caro forced Steele to make a big save two minutes in off a corner. The back-and-forth pace continued as Duke made Baylis come up with a stop a minute after. A foul in the circle would lead to a penalty stroke for Chillano, who flung the ball high into the left corner of the cage to give Duke the win.
Â
It was the Tigers' first overtime game since clinching the outright Ivy League title vs. Penn last November. Princeton fell to 7-5 overall while Duke improves to 11-2 this season. The Tigers' Ivy League trek continues next Saturday vs. Brown (12 p.m.) at Bedford. The non-conference portion of the 2016 schedule comes to a close next Sunday as Towson makes the trip to Princeton (1 p.m.).
