No. 11 Princeton continues Ivy League play vs. Brown (12 p.m.) on Saturday before finishing non-conference play vs. Towson (1 p.m.) on Sunday. Each game is at Bedford Field and will be available on the Ivy League Digital Network.
What's Going On?
- Princeton stands at 7-5 this year and 3-0 in the Ivy League. The Tigers scored three times in each half as they defeated Columbia last Friday, 6-0. The defending Ivy League champion followed that performance with a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to then No. 2 Duke.
- Junior Ryan McCarthy leads the team with eight goals and 19 points. Senior captain Cat Caro has snagged seven tallies while sophomore Sophia Tornetta has five goals in five games. Freshman Carlotta von Gierke has a team-high five assists.
- Princeton has two wins over top-20 teams this season, defeating then No. 12 Albany (Sept. 9) and then No. 10 Delaware (Sept. 11).
- The Tigers are No. 9 in the NCAA's RPI rankings.
- McCarthy is tied for the Ivy League lead in goals and is tied for second in points.
- Caro ranks inside the top five in goals (T-2nd) and points (5th).
- Carla Tagliente, formerly of UMass, was named head coach on June 29th.
- During her time at UMass, Tagliente averaged nearly 13 wins a year and guided the team to three Atlantic-10 titles. She was named A-10 Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013.
- Kristen Holmes-Winn stepped down as Princeton field hockey coach on June 20th to become the Vice President of Performance Science and Optimization for a company called "WHOOP."Â
- During her tenure, Holmes-Winn led Princeton to the 2012 National Championship, 12 Ivy League titles, 11 NCAA tournaments and a 164-80 overall (.672) and 86-5 Ivy (.940) record. In postseason play, the Tigers reached the NCAA quarterfinals seven times (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015).
- Caro, Tornetta and freshman Maddie Bacskai were on the United States U-21 women's national field hockey team that scored a silver medal at the Junior Pan American Tournament on Apr. 9.
- The trio, most recently, was selected to U-21 national team's roster for the Women's Hockey Junior World Cup this November.
- Katie Reinprecht '13, Julia Reinprecht '14 and Kathleen Sharkey '13 were named to the United States field hockey team that placed fifth at the 2016 Rio Olympics. It was the team's highest finish since 1996.
- The Tigers have won the last 16 matchups vs. the Bears.
- Brown's last victory in the series was during the 1999 season, ending Princeton's five-game winning streak.
- The last time that the Bears won consecutive games against the Tigers was a two-game stretch during the 1989 season.
- Princeton has won 17 of 18 meetings at home against Brown, last losing in 1984.
- 19th-ranked Princeton extended its win streak to five games with a 4-2 victory over Brown University on Goldberger Family Field.
- Erasing an early 1-0 deficit, the Tigers improved to 7-4 (4-0 Ivy) on the season and 30-8-1 all-time against the Bears (6-7, 1-3 Ivy).
- Princeton, which did not allow a shot on goal in the second half, finished with a 19-8 shot advantage and an 11-3 edge in penalty corners.
- Brown is 6-4 on the season and 2-1 in the Ivy League this season.
- The Bears have scored victories over Rider, Sacred Heart, Colgate, Columbia, Dartmouth and Bryant.
- After starting the season 0-2, Brown rattled off six consecutive victories before falling in its last two contests.
- Senior Lucy Green leads Brown in points with nine. Senior Jaclyn Torres also shares the goal lead (4) with Green. Four players have registered two assists on the team.
- Princeton has never faced Towson before.
- The Tigers are 2-11 on the year, picking up wins vs. LaSalle and LIU Brooklyn.
- Towson has led the nation in saves per game all season. The Tigers are averaging 13.77 saves per game, the most among Division I programs.
- Emilee Woodall's 11.69 saves per game are the second highest in Division I. Her .772 save percentage ranks in the top 10 nationally as well.
