Caro's Hat Trick Pushes No. 11 Princeton Over Brown, 5-1
October 15, 2016 | Field Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. – Behind senior captain Cat Caro's first career hat trick, the No. 11 Princeton Tigers dropped the Brown Bears, 5-1, at Bedford Field on Saturday afternoon. The senior set a new career high for goals in a season (10) in the contest and now has matched her personal best with 22 points this season.
Caro got the Tigers on the board early in the contest as she slapped a pass from sophomore Elise Wong in the back of the net. Sophomore Sophia Tornetta inserted a corner to Wong, who stopped the ball for Caro.
Â
The senior continued her stellar day with her second goal of the game in the 20th minute. After freshman Maddie Bacskai whipped a shot off a corner wide, the loose ball came right to Caro, who deposited it home.
Â
Five minutes later, junior Ryan McCarthy found some open space near midfield and dished a pass to junior Rachel Park. Park, in a 1v1 situation with the goalie, flipped the ball past Katie Hammaker, making the score 3-0.
Â
Right before halftime, McCarthy dribbled into the circle and knocked a backhand blast into the cage for her ninth goal of the season. Leading by four, Princeton had a dominating performance in the first half, outshooting Brown, 13-0.
Â
Brown's Gina Openshaw got the visitors on the board 11 minutes into the second half as she deflected a shot behind freshman Grace Baylis. Caro finished off her hat trick with an impressive individual effort at she ripped a backhanded shot in the circle by Hammaker with three minutes left.
Â
Princeton improved to 8-5 overall and 4-0 in the Ivy League while Brown dropped to 6-5 this season and 2-2 in Ivy action. The Tigers outshot the Bears, 27-2, and held a 9-0 advantage in penalty corners. Head coach Carla Tagliente's squad wraps up non-conference play tomorrow as Towson comes to Bedford Field (1 p.m.).
