What's Going On?
- Princeton is 6-4 on the year and 2-0 in the Ivy League after splitting its two games last weekend.
- Three different Tigers scored in the team's 3-0 victory at Yale last Saturday. Senior Hailey Reeves, freshmen Maddie Bacskai and Carlotta von Gierke each tallied a goal in the contest.
- Princeton dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 5 Penn State on the road on Sunday. Freshman Krista Hoffman and sophomore Jane Donio-Enscoe recorded goals.
- Junior Ryan McCarthy has collected a team-high 17 points and seven goals this year.
- Senior Cat Caro is the other Tiger with double-digit points with a total of 12.
- Princeton has two wins over top-20 teams this season, defeating then No. 12 Albany (Sept. 9) and then No. 10 Delaware (Sept. 11).
- The Tigers are No. 10 in the NCAA's RPI rankings.
- McCarthy is tied for the Ivy League lead in goals and is second in points.
- Caro ranks inside the top ten in goals (T-7th) and points (8th).
- Carla Tagliente, formerly of UMass, was named head coach on June 29th.
- During her time at UMass, Tagliente averaged nearly 13 wins a year and guided the team to three Atlantic-10 titles. She was named A-10 Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013.
- Kristen Holmes-Winn stepped down as Princeton field hockey coach on June 20th to become the Vice President of Performance Science and Optimization for a company called "WHOOP."Â
- During her tenure, Holmes-Winn led Princeton to the 2012 National Championship, 12 Ivy League titles, 11 NCAA tournaments and a 164-80 overall (.672) and 86-5 Ivy (.940) record. In postseason play, the Tigers reached the NCAA quarterfinals seven times (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015).
- Caro, Tornetta and Bacskai were on the United States U-21 women's national field hockey team that scored a silver medal at the Junior Pan American Tournament on Apr. 9.
- The trio, most recently, was selected to U-21 national team's roster for the Women's Hockey Junior World Cup this November.
- Katie Reinprecht '13, Julia Reinprecht '14 and Kathleen Sharkey '13 were named to the United States field hockey team that placed fifth at the 2016 Rio Olympics. It was the team's highest finish since 1996.
- The Tigers won the first 17 contests vs. the Lions from 1997-2013.
- Princeton has never lost at home to Columbia.
- Columbia's only victory vs. Princeton came in New York during the 2014 season.
- Sophomore Nicole Catalino netted the game-winner just 1:38 into overtime to give 19th-ranked Princeton a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Columbia on Bedford Field.
- With the start of the game delayed by an hour and a half due to rolling thunderstorms, the Tigers found themselves down 3-2 late in the second period. With just over three minutes remaining in regulation, Catalino netted the equalizer before striking again early in the extra session.
- The Lions are 6-4 on the season and 1-1 in the Ivy League. They have scored wins vs. Holy Cross, Central Michigan, Fairfield, Bryant, Cornell and Rider.
- Columbia and Princeton have one common opponent, Delaware, where the Lions fell to the Blue Hens, 8-2, on Sept. 16.
- Katie Ruesterholz leads the Lions with 10 goals and 26 points this season.
- Rebecca Bard has a team-high seven assists.
- Maeve Doherty was named the Ivy League Co-Player of the Week for her performance last week.
- Princeton has won three of the four meetings at Bedford against Duke.
- The Blue Devils' only victory at Bedford was in the first round of the 2005 NCAA Tournament.
- The two teams have split the four meetings at Duke.
- The Tigers won the first two contests ever vs. Duke (1997, 1998) and also won two straight in 2012-13.
- Despite a 12-save effort from junior goalie Anya Gersoff, seventh-ranked Princeton dropped a hard-fought decision to No. 4 Duke in its 2014 season opener, 1-0.
- Controlling much of the possession, the Blue Devils' Aileen Johnson redirected the game winner into the Tigers' cage at the 57:34 mark of the second half. Holding a 14-4 advantage in penalty corners, Duke finished with a 20-4 shot advantage.
- The Blue Devils are 10-1 in 2016 and 3-0 in the ACC.
- Duke has an impressive seven victories vs. top-20 teams. It has three common opponents with Princeton, scoring wins vs. Maryland, Virginia, but losing to North Carolina.
- Heather Morris has posted a team-best 11 goals and 24 points this year. Alyssa Chillano has secured eight tallies along with 19 points.
- With three shutouts and 1.24 goals-against-average, Sammi Steele is 10-1 in net for the Blue Devils.
