Bears Stun Tigers on Late Goal
October 08, 2016 | Women's Soccer
Brown scored once early, once late, and that was enough to secure its first win in five trips to Roberts Stadium and first win in Princeton since 2006.
The 2-1 loss is Princeton's first after an eight-game Ivy League unbeaten streak that began after Princeton dropped the 2014 season finale to Penn.
Brown pulled ahead 1-0 on a Jennifer Caruso goal in the 10th minute. Princeton keeper Natalie Grossi came out toward the top of the 18-yard box to stop a shot, and Caruso hammered home the rebound from just beyond the 18.
The Tigers saw a 302-minute home shutout streak end on that goal, one that had withstood three complete games since Fordham scored in the 68th minute of the season opener on Aug. 26. It was also the first time Princeton trailed at home since Oct. 7, 2015, when Army scored in the sixth minute of an eventual 4-1 Princeton win. Brown's goal was its first at Roberts Stadium since its 2008 opening and first against Princeton since 2013.
Mimi Asom put Princeton on the board in the 55th minute. Jesse McDonough started a corner kick that Abby Givens took control of in the box and passed forward to Asom, who knocked in her fifth goal of the season.
Though Princeton outshot Brown 14-8 overall and 8-5 on goal, the last goal went to the Bears. Brown had a corner kick that the Tigers couldn't clear, and the Bears' Amanda Lane had the initial shot on goal on the play. Grossi blocked that shot, but Brown's Celia Story knocked it back toward the goal. Despite a try at a goal-line save, a bounce off the post and a bounce off the crossbar, Brown got the goal and held on for the final 2:48 for the 2-1 win.
Princeton will head back into Ivy play next weekend with a 7 p.m. game at Columbia, which won at Penn Saturday night to stand atop the Ivy at 3-0 with nine standings points. The Lions are two points in front of Harvard, three in front of Brown and five in front of Princeton and Yale.
