Fourth-Ranked Tigers Get Impressive Win Over No. 5 Stanford To Open 2016-17 Season
November 18, 2016 | Women's Squash
Over her illustrious 23-year career, which includes five national championship seasons, Princeton women's squash head coach Gail Ramsay has experienced very few true tests in a season opener. She got one Friday night, and she watched her Tigers pass with flying colors.
The fourth-ranked Tigers, who have dealt with both injuries and inexperience throughout the preseason, rose to the occasion in their home opener. Five-game wins by co-captains Maria Elena Ubina and Alexandra Toth helped Princeton defeat fifth-ranked Stanford 6-3 at the Jadwin Squash Courts.
"I'm really impressed with the team tonight," Ubina said. "Everyone really prepared themselves to hit the ground running. After a tough Ivy scrimmage weekend, everyone was very motivated to push through our first home match."
A good start and a dominant middle shift were enough for the Tigers, who will play two more times this weekend — Franklin & Marshall Saturday, George Washington Sunday, both at noon — on the Ivy League Digital Network. A win by sophomore Isabel Hirshberg opened the team scoring for Princeton, while Toth rallied from a 2-1 deficit with wins of 11-9 and 13-11 in the final two games to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead after the opening shift.
Junior Kira Keating took a quick 3-0 win at No. 8, and Ubina followed with wins of 11-6 and 11-9 in her final two games to put Princeton on the brink of victory. Senior Gabriella Garr finished the job; she used a pair of 12-10 wins to jump ahead at the No. 5 spot, and she clinched the victory with a 11-6 win in the fourth. Junior Lindsey Scott gave Princeton its sixth win and did so in impressive fashion; she won 3-0 at the No. 4 position.
Friday also marked the collegiate debut for freshman Morgan Steelman, who put up an impressive fight in a 3-2 loss at No. 7. Steelman battled out of a 2-1 hole with a 14-12 win in the fourth, but Christie Huchro managed a narrow 11-9 win in the fifth. Sophomore Kate Feeley also dropped a tough five-game match at the No. 9 spot, though she had an 14-12 win of her own.
Junior co-captain Olivie Fiechter, who has also been limited in the preseason, was able to get back on the court Friday, and she showed her typical fight on the main court. Though she dropped a tight four-game match, her presence on the court was a big boost to a Princeton team that is hoping for even greater success during the final team weekend of the season, when Jadwin serves as host to the 2017 Howe Cup Championships.
"It was a good win coming off the Ivy scrimmage," Ramsay said. "Stanford is a good team with some new players at the top of their lineup that we know would give us some challenges. I thought the team put together a great performance today. Ubina played an exceptional match. And Garr also had an outstanding win. I was pleased with how they all coped and adjusted their games."
