PRINCETON, N.J. – No stranger to the NCAA Tournament, No. 18 Princeton took a different route to get there this season as it received the program's first-ever at-large bid tonight, the NCAA announced.
"This is a special team and I'm excited that we have the opportunity to continue in the NCAA Tournament," said head coach Carla Tagliente. "We have an incredibly talented group and they're thrilled to be moving forward."
The Tigers will take on No. 6 nationally ranked Penn State on Nov. 12 at 11:30 a.m. in State College, Pa.
It's the ninth straight season that the Tigers have reached the NCAA Tournament and 21st overall. Princeton is 28-20 all-time in the tournament. Winning the program's lone national championship in 2012, Princeton has advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals 14 times and made four trips to the national semifinals.
Harvard took the Ivy League's automatic bid, giving the conference two teams in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2002. "Hats off to the Ivy League for getting two teams into the tournament," added Tagliente. "There are only three conferences with multiple teams getting in and I think it speaks volumes for the completive balance of the conference." Harvard will battle No. 2 Syracuse.
Princeton is 10-7 overall and went 5-2 in the Ivy League. The Tigers boasted two top-20 wins, taking down then-No. 12 Albany (Sept. 9) and then-No. 10 Delaware (Sept. 11). Senior Cat Caro lead the team with 15 goals and 35 points. After scoring 12 goals in her first two seasons, junior Ryan McCarthy had 12 tallies this season and a career-high 26 points. Sophomore Sophia Tornetta is averaging over two points per game while freshman Carlotta von Gierke has a team-high seven assists.
