Seventeen 3-pointers and a program record-tying 13 assists from Spencer Weisz were enough for the Princeton men's basketball team to hold on and beat Liberty 67-64 to close a busy week of travel for the Tigers.
Princeton headed straight to Virginia from its split at the Pearl Harbor Invitational in Hawaii and got out to a 15-point lead with an early spark from home-stater Aaron Young, who went to high school in Lynchburg. Young nailed five first-half 3-pointers to tie his career high and added another after the break to finish with 18 points, topping the 15 he had against Rowan two years ago. Junior Young's 18 points co-led Princeton along with sophomore Myles Stephens, who bettered his previous best of 15 set last year against Columbia.
Weisz's 13 assists tied the program record of T.J. Bray '14, set three seasons ago in an overtime win at Penn State, and it bettered by four Weisz's previous career best of nine helpers in a game. The stat has been kept since the 1974-75 season.
Princeton pushed its nine-point halftime lead as high as 15, which came on a Stephens 3-pointer with just more than seven minutes to go. Liberty, however, went on a 9-0 run as part of a larger 16-2 run to trim the deficit to one at 63-62 with less than two minutes to go.
The Princeton lead was three at 65-62 when Liberty's A.C. Reid put up a long 3-pointer that was off the mark with 14 seconds to go, and Devin Cannady hit two free throws at the other end to put Princeton up five before a layup at the buzzer put the final margin at three.
The win was the 100th for head coach Mitch Henderson '98, who becomes the sixth Princeton coach to reach the century mark.
Princeton will head home to host Saint Joseph's in an ESPNU-televised game Wednesday at 5 p.m.
