• Princeton and Saint Joseph's will play the back end of a home-and-home series that began a year ago with a 62-50 Saint Joseph's win in Philadelphia. The Hawks return just 17 of their 62 points from that game, a number that could be just five if James Demery, the Hawks' leading returning scorer from a year ago, continues to miss time due to a stress fracture in his left foot. Princeton returns all 50 points from last year, led by 15 from Steven Cook.
• Neither team shot well in last year's game, with the Hawks' .386 field goal percentage better than Princeton's .288. Princeton's starters in that game other than Steven Cook (6-13) were 6 of 32 from the field with Spencer Weisz, Henry Caruso, Amir Bell and Pete Miller in that group. Cook was the only Tiger in double figures.
• Wednesday's game has been designated as a Coaches vs. Cancer game, with both Princeton coach Mitch Henderson and Saint Joseph's coach Phil Martelli on the organization's board, which Martelli chairs. The game is also a part of Princeton's Holiday Hoops Food Drive, and fans can bring two non-perishable food items to gain free admission.
• The program announced Dec. 11 that senior forward Hans Brase will miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury. The announcement came a year after Brase missed the 2015-16 campaign due to a knee injury suffered just before the start of the season.
• Monday, Steven Cook claimed the program's first Ivy League weekly honor of the season, being named the Ivy League Player of the Week. He averaged 14.3 points per game over last week's three contests, including the loss against Cal, win over Hawai'i and win over Liberty with a high of 21 against Hawai'i. That game was Cook's eighth career 20-point contest.
• Princeton traveled nearly 15,000 (approx. 14,801) miles before hosting their first Division I opponent in Saint Joseph's, going to BYU, Lehigh, Lafayette, VCU, Hawaii for Cal and Hawai'i, and Liberty. Until their first Ivy League road trip on the first weekend of February, however, the Tigers won't leave New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania, going to Bucknell and Monmouth and hosting Hampton, Cal Poly, Penn, Brown and Yale before the finals break takes up the second half of January.
• Saturday at Liberty, Mitch Henderson acheived his 100th career win, all at Princeton, making him the sixth Princeton men's basketball coach to reach the century mark. Henderson, tied as the fifth-winningest coach in program history, is 16 wins away from becoming Princeton's third-winningest coach outright. He is even with Frederick Leuhring (100, 1912-20) and trails Butch van Breda Kolff (103, 1962-67), Albert Wittmer (115, 1923-32), Franklin "Cappy" Cappon (250, 1938-43 & 1946-61) and Pete Carril (514, 1967-96).
• Teams average 10 of 26 from 3-point range against Saint Joseph's this year, right in line with Princeton's average on the season (10 of 27). The Hawks average 7 of 19 from distance this season.
• The Saint Joseph's game is the beginning of a key nine-day stretch for the Tigers, who go to Monmouth and Bucknell next Tuesday and Thursday. SJU is ranked 126th in the Pomeroy rankings through Sunday's games, with Monmouth 83rd and Bucknell 132nd. Other than that trio, Princeton will face only two other Pomeroy top-150 teams the rest of the way in Harvard (147) and Yale (119). The first month of the season has been a challenging one for the Tigers, who have faced four top-110 Pomeroy teams in BYU (56), Lehigh (107), VCU (49) and California (50). Princeton was 61st through Sunday's games.
• Up Next: Princeton will play a pair of road games in three days beginning Tuesday at Monmouth before heading to Bucknell Thursday. The Tigers last faced Monmouth in 2010 and hosted Bucknell last season. Princeton has won the last three against the Bison since a loss in Lewisburg in Mitch Henderson's first season of 2011-12, and Princeton has won the last two against Monmouth since Sydney Johnson's first season leading the team in 2007-08.
• On Saint Joseph's: The Hawks lost their top three scorers from a year ago and saw a fourth, James Demery, sidelined with an injury after the season's first game. Shavar Newkirk, the team's fifth-leading scorer from a year ago, leads the team this year at 21.1 points per game. SJU won the A-10 tournament and drew a No. 8 seed in the NCAA Tournament, knocking off ninth-seeded Cincinnati before falling to top-seeded Oregon by five. Entering Monday's games, SJU was eighth in the nation in fewest turnovers with 89 and was also in the top 10 percent nationally in fewest fouls (18th, 137) and turnovers per game (25th, 11.1).
• Under Mitch Henderson, the Tigers now have a 38-33 (.535) record in the pre-New Year portion of the schedule and a 62-24 (.721) record from Jan. 1 forward.
• Markell Lodge is the Hawks' tallest starter at 6-7, and of the three players on the roster taller than Lodge, Javon Baumann (6-8, 16.6 mpg) and Jai Williams (6-9, 8.0 mpg) average less than 20 minutes per game and Pierfrancesco Oliva is out for the season while recovering from knee surgery. Pete Miller (6-11) is Princeton's lone starter above 6-5.
• ESPN's latest bracketology was unveiled Thursday, Dec. 8, and the Tigers were a projected 13th seed in the East in Buffalo against West Virginia with the winner meeting Purdue, Arkansas or Pittsburgh. Among Princeton opponents this season, VCU is a 10 seed in the Midwest, Lehigh is a 15 seed in the Midwest, and Monmouth is a 12 seed in the South.
• Saint Joseph's was the ninth pick in the A-10 preseason media and coaches poll. SJU is Princeton's second A-10 opponent of the season after VCU, which was picked third. Princeton, the top pick in the Ivy preseason media poll, is looking to break a three-game skid against A-10 schools, including the VCU game last month, the trip to SJU last year and a visit to George Mason two seasons ago after Princeton beat GMU in Jadwin in 2013.
• With his last basket during the Hawai'i game, Spencer Weisz became the 31st player in program history to reach 1,000 points, now at 1,003. Two other active Tigers are within their prior season's average of 1,000, Steven Cook at 849 and Henry Caruso at 690. Weisz can now begin the climb up the list of 1,000-point scorers, with Will Venable '05 next at 1,010, followed by former teammate T.J. Bray '14 at 1,024.
• Spencer Weisz tied the program's record for assists in a game last time out against Liberty, dishing 13 helpers to tie T.J. Bray '14 against Penn State. The stat has been kept since the 1974-75 season. Weisz is also climbing the Princeton career leaderboard in that stat, standing eighth with 288 with Marcus Schroeder '10 (295) and coach Mitch Henderson '98 (304) just ahead of him. The program record belongs to William Ryan '84, with 413. Ryan also has the single-season mark of 161, set in the 1983-84 campaign.
• Entering Monday's games, Princeton led the Ivy League in scoring defense (66.0 ppg allowed), scoring margin (+6.8 ppg), 3FG percentage defense (.286), turnover margin (+1.62/gm), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3), defensive rebounds (27.1 drpg), defensive rebound percentage (.789) and 3s per game (10.1). Spencer Weisz led the Ivy in assist-to-turnover ratio (4.3) and was eighth in the nation in that category. Steven Cook's 13 steals co-led the league. Nationally, Princeton ranked 16th in 3s per game at 10.1 and was also in the top 10 percent in the nation in fewest turnovers (17th, 92) and 3FG percentage defense (28th, .286).
• Princeton has shot better than 40 percent from the field six times this season, all in the last seven games, and four times from 3-point range this season, all in the last five games.
• Princeton returns 99 percent of its points and minutes from last year, a group that includes its top 13 scorers from last year and three 2016 All-Ivy League honorees in Henry Caruso (first team), Spencer Weisz (second team) and Steven Cook (honorable mention).
• Princeton had a change in the starting lineup for the first time this season against Cal, with sophomore Devin Cannady making his first career start and senior Pete Miller entering the lineup for the first time this season. The Tigers continued with that lineup against Hawai'i.
• Princeton has three players who have earned All-Ivy League honors during their careers: Spencer Weisz was the 2014 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and 2015 and 2016 second-team All-Ivy. Steven Cook was 2015 second-team All-Ivy and 2016 honorable mention All-Ivy. Henry Caruso was 2016 first-team All-Ivy.
• Princeton was in the top 10 percent of the nation (top 34) in five statistical categories at the end of last season: third in fewest fouls (503), sixth in fewest turnovers (331), 14th in 3s per game (9.7), 21st in scoring margin (+10.5 ppg) and 31st in 3FG percentage (.383).
• Princeton led the Ivy League at the end of last year in scoring offense (79.1 ppg, 39th nationally) in fewest turnovers, fewest fouls, defensive rebounds per game (26.93), fewest personal fouls per game (17.3) and 3s per game.
• Princeton's 79.1 ppg last season was the third-highest in program history and highest since the 1971-72 season, a program-record 79.69 points per game. The 1964-65 Final Four team averaged 79.69 ppg.
• Princeton is coming off its quadrennial foreign trip. The Tigers went to Italy in late August, spending two nights each in Rome, Florence, Bologna with a side trip to Venice, Vicenza and Cernobbio on Lake Como. Princeton played three games, starting by closing a 21-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Fortitudo Kontatto in Bologna, a second-division Italian team, 93-87 in overtime. Khyan Rayner hit a halfcourt buzzer-beater to send the game to OT. Next, Princeton faced ASD Pallacanestro Vicenza, winning that game 67-58 against a third-division Italian team. The Tigers closed the trip with an 84-80 OT loss to Junior Casale, another second-division Italian team. Princeton had 15 players on the trip, not including the freshmen, and 13, except Hans Brase and Elias Berbari, saw playing time. Among the Tigers on the Italy trip was Devin Cannady, who had also studied in Tanzania earlier in the summer.
• The Ivy League has won five NCAA Tournament games in the last seven seasons. Cornell advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2010, Harvard beat New Mexico in 2013 and Cincinnati in 2014, and Yale beat Baylor in 2016. Princeton came within a buzzer-beating bank shot of adding to that in 2011, but Kentucky's Brandon Knight saved a 57-55 win, and Harvard fell to UNC just 67-65 in 2015.
• The Pete Carril coaching tree is going strong in the 2016-17 season. Seven current Division I head coaches played for and/or coached under Carril, including Mitch Henderson '98, Mike Brennan '94 (American), John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond), Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield), Brian Earl '99 (Cornell) and Bill Carmody (Holy Cross).
• #IVYMADNESS: The inaugural Ivy League men's and women's basketball tournaments will take place Saturday and Sunday, March 11-12, 2017, at the Palestra in Philadelphia. The top four teams will earn berths in the tournament, with the semifinals on Saturday and the championships on Sunday. All six games will be broadcast live on ESPN's networks. The winner of the regular season will be the Ivy League champion, and the tournament winner will receive the automatic NCAA tournament bid with the regular-season champion, if different, earning an NIT bid. The site past 2017 has not been determined.
