• Princeton and Liberty will get together for the fourth year in a row Saturday and for the second time in Lynchburg. The teams began the all-time series three years ago with an 80-74 Princeton win at Liberty, followed by two more Tiger wins in Jadwin Gym over the last two seasons. The Tigers return all 77 points from last year's meeting led by 29 from Henry Caruso, while Liberty returns 43 of its 72 with Evan Maxwell (22) not among those. Maxwell transferred to Kansas. Hans Brase (12 in 2013-14), Steven Cook (16 in 2014-15) and Spencer Weisz (13 in 2014-15) have also scored in double figures against the Flames, among current Tigers.
• Saturday's game will mark the end of a week-long journey that took Princeton nearly 15,000 (approx. 14,801) miles before the Tigers host their first Division I opponent, Dec. 14 against Saint Joseph's. The log includes a trip to BYU, local trips to Lehigh and Lafayette, heading down to VCU, to Hawaii for the Pearl Harbor Invitational, and now to Liberty.
• Princeton's travel radius will shrink considerably after the Liberty game, as Princeton will not leave the Ivy footprint of states (New England, plus New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania) the rest of the way.
• Princeton's next win will be the 100th for head coach Mitch Henderson, which would make him the sixth Princeton men's basketball coach to reach the century mark. Henderson is 17 wins away from becoming Princeton's third-winningest coach outright. He trails Frederick Leuhring (100, 1912-20), Butch van Breda Kolff (103, 1962-67), Albert Wittmer (115, 1923-32), Franklin "Cappy" Cappon (250, 1938-43 & 1946-61) and Pete Carril (514, 1967-96).
• Whereas most teams the Tigers play haven't seen many opponents that shoot as many 3s as the Tigers average taking, Saturday's game will be a reverse of that, as the Flames average 9 of 27 from distance to the Tigers' 9 of 26. Liberty's opponents average 6 of 20, and UMass-Lowell and Division III Cairn have taken the most against the Flames this year, with 25.
• Up Next: Princeton will host Saint Joseph's Wednesday at 5 p.m. on ESPNU in the back end of a home-and-home that began last year with a 62-50 Hawks win at Hagan Arena. SJU and Princeton both face Columbia, Lafayette, Penn and VCU this year, but all of those teams have yet to face either Princeton or SJU.
• On Liberty: The Flames have just two seniors in Ray Chen and John Dawson, and of the two only Dawson is a starter. Both Princeton and Liberty played VCU this year, with Liberty getting the game at home and falling by five, 64-59. Princeton fell by 11 in Richmond on Nov. 29, two weeks after the Liberty game. Caleb Homesley, a 6-4 sophomore, leads the Flames in scoring, rebounding and assists per game (co-leads). Liberty's top national statistical ranking entering Friday's games was its 28th-highest 240 3FG attempts. Junior Ryan Kemrite was 24th in the nation in 3FG percentage at .512.
• Under Mitch Henderson, the Tigers now have a 37-33 (.529) record in the pre-New Year portion of the schedule and a 62-24 (.721) record from Jan. 1 forward.
• Monmouth is now Princeton's highest remaining opponent by KenPom ranking, at 79 through Thursday's games. VCU is the highest, at 49, followed by Cal at 50 and BYU at 60 among teams in the top 100. Princeton checked in 56th and had the 25th-toughest schedule in the nation through Thursday's games.
• The tallest player on the Liberty roster is 6-9 rookie Josiah Talbert, a reserve for the Flames, and 6-5 freshman Myo Baxter-Bell is the tallest among the six most common Liberty starters at 6-5. The Tigers start 6-11 senior Pete Miller, and 6-10 rookie Will Gladson averaged 15 minutes per game during the Hawaii trip.
• ESPN's latest bracketology was unveiled Thursday, Dec. 8, and the Tigers were a projected 13th seed in the East in Buffalo against West Virginia with the winner meeting Purdue, Arkansas or Pittsburgh. Among Princeton opponents this season, VCU is a 10 seed in the Midwest, Lehigh is a 15 seed in the Midwest, and Monmouth is a 12 seed in the South.
• Liberty was the second pick in the Big South preseason poll behind consensus top pick Winthrop among the 30 voters. The Tigers were the top pick in the Ivy League.
• With his last basket during the Hawai'i game, Spencer Weisz became the 31st player in program history to reach 1,000 points, entering the Liberty game on the number. Three other active Tigers are within their prior season's average of 1,000, including Hans Brase at 863, Steven Cook at 834 and Henry Caruso at 688. Weisz can now begin the climb up the list of 1,000-point scorers, with Will Venable '05 next at 1,010, followed by former teammate T.J. Bray '14 at 1,024.
• Entering Friday's games, Princeton led the Ivy League in scoring margin (+7.3 ppg), 3FG percentage defense (.271), turnover margin (+1.71), defensive rebounds (27.1 drpg), defensive rebound percentage (.776), and 3s per game (9.1). Steven Cook was the league's steals leader at 1.7 spg. Nationally, Princeton's best statistical ranking was 13th in 3FG percentage defense (.271) with its 18th-fewest turnovers (85) and 34th-fewest fouls (131) also in the nation's top 10 percent.
• Princeton has shot better than 40 percent from the field five times this season, all in the last six games, and three times from 3-point range this season, all in the last four games.
• Princeton returns 99 percent of its points and minutes from last year, a group that includes its top 13 scorers from last year and three 2016 All-Ivy League honorees in Henry Caruso (first team), Spencer Weisz (second team) and Steven Cook (honorable mention).
• Princeton had a change in the starting lineup for the first time this season against Cal, with sophomore Devin Cannady making his first career start and senior Pete Miller entering the lineup for the first time this season. The Tigers continued with that lineup against Hawai'i.
• Princeton has three players who have earned All-Ivy League honors during their careers: Spencer Weisz was the 2014 Ivy League Rookie of the Year and 2015 and 2016 second-team All-Ivy. Steven Cook was 2015 second-team All-Ivy and 2016 honorable mention All-Ivy. Henry Caruso was 2016 first-team All-Ivy.
• Princeton was in the top 10 percent of the nation (top 34) in five statistical categories at the end of last season: third in fewest fouls (503), sixth in fewest turnovers (331), 14th in 3s per game (9.7), 21st in scoring margin (+10.5 ppg) and 31st in 3FG percentage (.383).
• Princeton led the Ivy League at the end of last year in scoring offense (79.1 ppg, 39th nationally) in fewest turnovers, fewest fouls, defensive rebounds per game (26.93), fewest personal fouls per game (17.3) and 3s per game.
• Princeton's 79.1 ppg last season was the third-highest in program history and highest since the 1971-72 season, a program-record 79.69 points per game. The 1964-65 Final Four team averaged 79.69 ppg.
• Princeton is coming off its quadrennial foreign trip. The Tigers went to Italy in late August, spending two nights each in Rome, Florence, Bologna with a side trip to Venice, Vicenza and Cernobbio on Lake Como. Princeton played three games, starting by closing a 21-point fourth-quarter deficit to defeat Fortitudo Kontatto in Bologna, a second-division Italian team, 93-87 in overtime. Khyan Rayner hit a halfcourt buzzer-beater to send the game to OT. Next, Princeton faced ASD Pallacanestro Vicenza, winning that game 67-58 against a third-division Italian team. The Tigers closed the trip with an 84-80 OT loss to Junior Casale, another second-division Italian team. Princeton had 15 players on the trip, not including the freshmen, and 13, except Hans Brase and Elias Berbari, saw playing time. Among the Tigers on the Italy trip was Devin Cannady, who had also studied in Tanzania earlier in the summer.
• The Ivy League has won five NCAA Tournament games in the last seven seasons. Cornell advanced to the Sweet 16 in 2010, Harvard beat New Mexico in 2013 and Cincinnati in 2014, and Yale beat Baylor in 2016. Princeton came within a buzzer-beating bank shot of adding to that in 2011, but Kentucky's Brandon Knight saved a 57-55 win, and Harvard fell to UNC just 67-65 in 2015.
• The Pete Carril coaching tree is going strong in the 2016-17 season. Seven current Division I head coaches played for and/or coached under Carril, including Mitch Henderson '98, Mike Brennan '94 (American), John Thompson III '88 (Georgetown), Chris Mooney '94 (Richmond), Sydney Johnson '97 (Fairfield), Brian Earl '99 (Cornell) and Bill Carmody (Holy Cross).
• #IVYMADNESS: The inaugural Ivy League men's and women's basketball tournaments will take place Saturday and Sunday, March 11-12, 2017, at the Palestra in Philadelphia. The top four teams will earn berths in the tournament, with the semifinals on Saturday and the championships on Sunday. All six games will be broadcast live on ESPN's networks. The winner of the regular season will be the Ivy League champion, and the tournament winner will receive the automatic NCAA tournament bid with the regular-season champion, if different, earning an NIT bid. The site past 2017 has not been determined.
