A win over Yale Friday night would keep Princeton in strong position in the Ivy League race, and a loss would put the Tigers in a tough spot.
The stakes were that simple, and with a late first-half run, the Tigers put themselves in the thick of the Ivy race as the second go-round of league play began.
Devin Cannady scored 20 points to lead four Tigers in double figures in a 75-63 win over the Bulldogs, who fell to 8-1 in the Ivy with their first loss after a 12-game win streak. Princeton improved to 7-1 in the Ivy with four of its last six league games at home.
Princeton will have little time to celebrate, with Brown coming in Saturday for a 6 p.m. tip. But if the Tigers can hold serve against the Bears, it sets up another showdown next Friday against Columbia, the third team in the trio atop the league. The Lions improved to 7-2 in the Ivy with a home win over Harvard Friday night.
Yale led 27-21 with five minutes left before halftime, but Princeton went on a 13-0 run that was part of a larger 18-2 streak to close the half and take a 10-point lead into the break.
The Bulldogs didn't let the lead grow much larger after the break, getting three straight baskets from Brandon Sherrod, who finished with a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards, to trim the Princeton lead to 39-35 just more than two minutes into the half.
Princeton was able to keep Yale from getting any closer, and once the Tiger lead reached 12 for the first time on a pair of Amir Bell free throws to make it 52-40 with 13-plus minutes to go, Yale never got closer than six points the rest of the way.
