PRINCETON, N.J. (4/15/16) - The Princeton men's track & field team holds a steady 20-point lead after three events as the 2016 Princeton Outdoor Invitational wraps up Day 2.
Sophomore James Burns PR'ed in the decathlon. He accrued 6,078 points, surpassing his previous best of 5,890 from last year's IC4A Championship. He finished in fourth place, moving up one place from yesterday. Burns' best event today was a second-place finish in the discus with a toss of 32.99. He was third in three events: the hurdles with a time of 15.14, the javelin with a throw of 40.45, and the 1500 with a time of 4:50.27. He placed fourth in the pole vault, clearing 3.48.
Senior Bryan Oslin took fifth in the decathlon with 5,330 points. Though he won the final event, the 1500, with a time of 4:50.27 two field events would keep him from climbing any higher, after he fouled on his javelin attempts and no heighted in the pole vault. He did take third in the discus with a throw of 32.64 and then placed fourth in the hurdles with a time of 16.31.
Freshman Adam Kelly won the first field event of the meet, claiming a victory in the hammer throw. He threw to 66.57 (218-5) on his third attempt, his best throw of the season. Any of his three countable throws would have won him the event, as he also reached 64.37 and 65.57. Junior Vic Youn was sixth with a mark of 58.28 (191-2) on his third throw. In all the pair claimed 11 points towards the team total.
The tandem of junior Chris Cook and sophomore Mitchel Charles claimed another 1-2 punch in the shot put. Cook won the event with a throw of 17.85 (58-6.75) on his third throw, while Charles had a mark of 17.56 (57-7.50) on his final throw. The duo also went 1-2 at Ivy League Heptagonal Championship in the indoor shot put in March.
With three events scored, Princeton holds a 20-point margin in the team rankings with 40 points. Monmouth is in second place with 20 points.
Tomorrow the meet will begin at 10 a.m., with the javelin with the first track event being the high hurdles at noon.
