Barowski Runs Olympic Trials Qualifying Time at Stanford
April 03, 2016 | Women's Track and Field
STANFORD, Calif. (4/2/16) - Senior Cecilia Barowski said it after her preliminary race at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships after she qualified for the finals.
The All-America, who finished sixth in the finals, said “I would love to go under 2:03, and hit the trial standard. If I run under 2:03, I don't care if I come in dead last - as long as I secure a spot for July - that's my ultimate goal.”
Goal met.
Barowski ran 2:02.62 this afternoon at the Stanford Invitational to meet the USA Olympic trials qualifying standard. The time is a Princeton and an Ivy League record, as no runner has ever run under 2:03 in Ivy League history. She led the race start to finish and bested 54 other competitors at the Invitational.
“Ceil just took the bull by the horns,” Princeton head coach Peter Farrell said. “In an incredibly confident move she turned to the other seven women in the race and implored "this isn't a conference race looking to score points for your team or a qualifying heat for nationals, we're only here (Stanford) to run fast so who's gonna help with the pace?" Three stepped up and nodded but when those three stalled after 180 meters Ceil carried the load for the rest of the way with incredibly even splits : 29 :30 :30 :30 for a 2:02.62 punching her and my ticket to the Olympic Trials on July 1 in Eugene Ore.”
