British Four, Incoming Additions, Mean 16 Tiger Rowers Head To Rotterdam For U23, Junior Worlds
August 18, 2016 | Heavyweight Rowing, Women's Rowing - Open, Men's Rowing - Lightweight
Just because the final oar has left the Rodrigo de Freitas rowing venue in Rio doesn't mean that Princeton isn't finished with its major international rowing competitions this summer.
The addition of four Princeton rowers to the British U-23 team, as well the naming of six incoming recruits to the Junior Worlds, means that 16 Tigers (past, present and future) will head to Rotterdam, Netherlands, next week to compete in either the U-23 or Junior World Championships (during Olympic years, the Senior Worlds, U23 Worlds and Juniors Worlds are held simultaneously).
The Great Britain U-23 team will include current heavyweights Matt Benstead, Tom George and Tim Livingstone, as well as incoming freshman David Bewicke-Copley. Bewicke-Copley will join both Livingstone and Benstead on the G.B. M8+, while George will be on the M4-. George and Livingstone were both members of the Princeton varsity boat that won silver at Sprints and bronze at the IRA Championships, while Benstead was a member of the 2V that won silver at both the Sprints and IRA Championships.
Those four will join Americans Nick Mead, Trey Francis, Emily Kallfelz and Emma Hopkins at the U23s, while former heavyweight captain Martin Barakso and Daniel de Groot will row in a four together for Team Canada.
Meanwhile, six incoming rowers from the heavyweight, open or men's lightweight teams will be competing at the World Junior Championships.
Great Britain will have four of the World Juniors qualifiers, including two in the same boat. Ironically, the duo in the same boat will actually be joining different Princeton programs. Both incoming heavyweight Sebastian Benzecry and incoming lightweight Oskar Arzt-Jones will will row in the British JM8+. The heavyweights and lightweights will also have one added representative on the British team. Heavyweight Oswald Stocker will row in the JM4-, while lightweight Adam Teece will row in the JM2-.
Incoming heavyweight Andy LeRoux and incoming open rower Molly Milligan will be representing Team USA next week. LeRoux is making his third straight trip to the Junior Worlds and will row in the JM4x, while Milligan will compete in the JW4x.
Princeton men's lightweight assistant coach Bill Manning will also make another international appearance, as he will serve as the Team USA coach for the JW4-.
