Lussi Scores Twice as Women's Soccer Wins Season Opener, 3-1
August 26, 2016 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (8/26/16) - Senior Tyler Lussi scored twice in the first nine minutes of the 2016 season to help lift the Princeton women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Fordham in the season opener this evening on Myslik Field at Roberts Stadium. The two goals push Lussi closer to another goal: becoming the all-time Princeton soccer goal scorer.
With 45 career goals, Lussi is just two away from tying the all-time record, for either gender, held by Esmeralda Negron '05 and three more will give her the solo record.
She sparked the offense in the eighth minute when she buried a lofted ball from sophomore Samantha McDonough from the midfield. Though marked up, Lussi had no trouble getting the ball on her foot and putting it past the keeper. Less than two minutes later she notched her second on a Princeton throw-in. Junior Mikaela Symanovich took the throw and it reached sophomore Mimi Asom at the right post. Asom made a great flick and put the ball right out in front where a speeding Lussi was able to knock it in.
Asom and Lussi paired up again early in the second half, as the Tigers grabbed a 3-0 lead. Symanovich again worked the ball around in front of the Princeton bench and found Lussi about 30 yards out. A one-timer put the ball at the feet of Asom and she made a run to the goal with her defender trailing the entire way.
"We need both leading goal scorers to score goals," Princeton coach Sean Driscoll said. "It gives us confidence and they feed off confidence. When you have your two star strikers goings, that's great."
Lane Cronin was able to prevent the shutout with a goal in the 68th minute for the Rams. She took advantage of a free ball in the box that was unable to be kicked out by the Princeton defense.
"We started well in both halves," Driscoll said. "We fell off a little bit, we scored two goals and I think that's the natural thing to do, to just get complacent. We started the give the ball away too easily and we started to fatigue and they did a very good job. I give a lot of credit to that team, they're an engine, they played until the last minute."
Natalie Grossi made three saves in the game, though the first save of the game was made by none-other-than Lussi. On a corner kick, Lussi headed the ball over the cross bar fora t eam save. On the other end of the field Megan Fitzgerald made three saves.
Princeton returns to action on Sunday, August 28 when it hosts Villanova at 7 p.m. The game will be televised LIVE on ESPNU.
