PRINCETON, N.J. - After being named Ivy League Co-Player of the Week, Princeton field hockey's Sophia Tornetta was named the Suburban Transit GoPrincetonTigers.com Athlete of the Week.
Tornetta got the weekend started with a five-point outing in Princeton's 3-2 comeback victory over No. 12 Albany on Friday. Trailing 2-1, the striker deflected junior Ryan McCarthy's (last week's Ivy League Player of the Week) pass in the back of the net to tie the game. Later in the contest, Tornetta assisted on the game-winning goal by junior Lexi Quirk with 3:23 to go.
Â
On Sunday, the sophomore cleared a defender in the circle and swiped a backhanded blast past the goalie as the clock ticked under three minutes remaining, giving her team an insurance goal in a 4-2 win.
Tornetta is having a sparkling start to the season as she currently sits in the top 10 nationally in goals per game (eighth, 1.33) and points per game (ninth, 3.0).
With three straight victories, the No. 16 Princeton Tigers head to No. 11 Virginia on Friday (4 p.m.) before No. 7 Maryland travels to Bedford Field on Sept. 20 (6 p.m.).
