PRINCETON, N.J. (9/17/16) - Senior Ally Markovich was the top Tiger finisher as Princeton hosted Harvard and Yale at the annual HYP meet at West Windsor Fields on Saturday morning.
Markovich was ninth overall at 19:29.9 with junior Melinda Renuart also finishing in under 20 minutes at 19:54.3 in 12th place. Three freshmen followed as the final three scorers, as Alexandra Rome was 13th at 20:00.5, Rachel Granovsky 16th at 20:05.9 and Madeleine Sumner 18th at 20:11.0. Junior Melissa Reed and sophomore Allie Klimkiewicz rounded out the top seven with times of 20:25.3 and 20:34.0.
"Today is the starting point of the season," Princeton head coach Brad Hunt said. "The special tradition of HYP created an exciting atmosphere on a low key weekend in mid-September. Because we were unable to race some of our top returners, as they focus on bouncing back to good health, we learned so much about our current team. Ally Markovich demonstrated that she has evolved as a student-athlete, running with some of the very best in the Ivy League. The freshmen debuted in the proud Princeton uniform, and we recognize that we need veterans and newcomers alike, to step up and accept their role as an important scoring member of the program. We are young and inexperienced, so each competitive opportunity is important in the development of the team and the individual. Congratulations to Yale on a strong team performance. We remain focused on improving as a group, with an eye toward the championship season."
Yale won the race with a score of 20, grabbing four of the top five scoring slots. Harvard was second with 53 points and had the top finisher, Courtney Smith at 19:07.8. Princeton earned 63 points to take third.
The first HYP race was held in 1978 and has been held nearly every year with the exception of 2009, 2012 and 2013. Princeton last victory came in 2014 in New Haven.
The Tigers will be back in action next Friday, Sept. 23 when they race in the Virginia/Panorama Farms Invitational in Charlottesville.
