September 25, 2016 | Field Hockey
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Junior Ryan McCarthy scored twice as the No. 13 Princeton field hockey team took care of the American University Eagles, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon.
With her two tallies, McCarthy has seven goals on the season which ties her career high. Sophomore Grace Baylis had five saves in the win.
McCarthy got the Tigers on the board as she scored on a penalty stroke in the eighth minute. After an American corner, sophomore Casey Swezey found McCarthy streaking down the field where the junior blasted a shot from the right wing into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
The Tigers looked to add on as they took three consecutive shots in 31st minute, forcing American's Maura Jacobs to make two saves.
American got on the board in the 64th minute when it had back-to-back corners. On the second corner, the Eagles' Angela Virtu picked up a rebound and slid it past Baylis. The Eagles were also awarded a corner as time expired, but couldn't get an offensive threat together.
Princeton will continue the road portion of its schedule next weekend with trips to Yale (Oct. 1) and Penn State (Oct. 2).
