What's Going On?
- The Tigers are 5-3 on the season and 1-0 in the Ivy League after going 2-1 last week.
- Princeton fell to then No. 6 Maryland last Tuesday, 2-1. Maryland's Grace Balsdon scored twice while senior Cat Caro tallied a goal for Princeton.
- Caro added two more goals as Princeton opened up Ivy League play with a 4-0 victory over Dartmouth on Saturday. The Tigers outshot the Big Green, 33-2 in the game.
- Junior Ryan McCarthy recorded both of the team's goals as Princeton defeated American, 2-1 on Sunday.
- McCarthy leads the team with 17 points and seven goals, tying her career high for goals in a season.
- Caro has five goals this year which ties her mark from last season.
- Princeton has two wins over top-20 teams this season, defeating then No. 12 Albany (Sept. 9) and then No. 10 Delaware (Sept. 11).
- The Tigers are No. 8 in the NCAA's RPI rankings.
- McCarthy is the Ivy League leader in goals and points and is tied for third in assists.
- Caro is tied for second among conference foes in goals.
- Despite missing four games this year, Sophia Tornetta is tied for seventh in the Ivy League in goals with four.
- Carla Tagliente, formerly of UMass, was named head coach on June 29th.
- During her time at UMass, Tagliente averaged nearly 13 wins a year and guided the team to three Atlantic-10 titles. She was named A-10 Coach of the Year in 2012 and 2013.
- Kristen Holmes-Winn stepped down as Princeton field hockey coach on June 20th to become the Vice President of Performance Science and Optimization for a company called "WHOOP."
- During her tenure, Holmes-Winn led Princeton to the 2012 National Championship, 12 Ivy League titles, 11 NCAA tournaments and a 164-80 overall (.672) and 86-5 Ivy (.940) record. In postseason play, the Tigers reached the NCAA quarterfinals seven times (2006, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015).
- Caro, Tornetta and freshman Maddie Bacskai were on United States U-21 women's national field hockey team that scored a silver medal at the Junior Pan American Tournament on Apr. 9.
- Katie Reinprecht '13, Julia Reinprecht '14 and Kathleen Sharkey '13 were named to the United States field hockey team that placed fifth at the 2016 Rio Olympics. It was the team's highest finish since 1996.
- The Tigers have won 31 consecutive matches against Yale, dating back to 1985.
- Princeton has not lost to Yale since 1977 and have never lost on the road to Yale.
- The field hockey team took each of the first five meetings between the programs, including the inaugural showdown in 1971, 3-2.
- Yale earned its first victory over Princeton in 1976, 2-0.
- The Bulldogs' last victory over Princeton came in 1977 (W, 1-0).
- Princeton and Yale battled to ties in 1980 (T, 0-0), 1983 (T, 1-1), and 1984 (T, 0-0).
- Maddie Copeland '16 and McCarthy each netted a pair of goals to lead the 20th-ranked Princeton University field hockey team to a 4-0 victory over Yale University on Bedford Field.
- Netting her eighth goal in four games, Copeland also assisted on McCarthy's second tally in the waning moments of regulation. Also turning in a solid defensive effort, the Tigers did not allow a shot or surrender a penalty corner in the contest.
- The Bulldogs are 4-4 on the season and 0-1 in the Ivy League.
- Yale has victories over Sacred Heart, Bryant, Hofstra and Georgetown.
- Last weekend, the Bulldogs dropped a 2-0 decision to Harvard to begin conference play and lost to No. 18 Stanford, 3-1.
- Carol Middough leads the team with five goals and 11 points this year.
- The two teams have split the last four meetings between each other.
- After losing the first 14 matchups, the Tigers won its first game vs. Penn State, 3-1 during the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 1998. Princeton also won the next two games including 4-2 decision in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2000.
- Penn State took home eight straight contest between 2001-07.
- The Tigers last won in University Park in 2012, a 3-2 victory.
- Behind another solid defensive effort and goals from Copeland and Nicole Catalino, the 20th-ranked Princeton University field hockey team earned a 2-0 victory over Penn State University on Bedford Field.
- Princeton finished with a 14-9 shot advantage with each team earning six penalty corners. Anya Gersoff made seven saves in the win.
- The Nittany Lions are 9-1 on the season and ranked No. 5 in the country.
- Princeton and Penn State have three common opponents, Virginia, Albany and Bucknell. The Nittany Lions beat Virginia, 3-0 on Aug. 28, was victorious against Albany (3-1, Aug. 4) and won against Bucknell, 9-1 (Sept. 13).
- Penn State has not lost at home this season (4-0).
- Moira Putsch has a team-leading 29 points (9 goals, 10 assists).
- The Nittany Lions have four players with at least 17 points as Brooke Birosik, Shay Cannon and Gini Bramley each have at least seven goals.
