HYP on Tap for Tigers
January 26, 2017 | Men's Track and Field, Women's Track and Field
The Princeton track & field teams will get an early peek at the Ivy League competition when it competes in the annual Harvard-Yale-Princeton meet on Sunday, Jan. 29 in New Haven, Conn.
The meet gets underway at Coxe Cage at noon with the field events, while the first running event is at 2:30 p.m.
The men's team is undefeated in the last 24 HYP meets, winning from every year since 1989. Last year the squad posted a 77-point victory over Harvard and an 84-point win over Yale. Since the first HYP meet in 1953, Princeton has claimed 32 titles, with Harvard trailing with 19 and Yale with 10. Princeton holds HYP records in 10 of 17 events.
Princeton has won the 60 every season since 2010 and have won the last four 200s. Carrington Akosa boasts the top times in both events and is in the top 50 in the nation in both as well. Freshman Joey Daniels has the team's best chance to win the 60 hurdles as he has the best time between the three schools at 8.00. Xavier Bledsoe recorded a PR of 2.14 in the high jump earlier this season and has the top mark in an event the Tigers have won the last 10 times out. Junior August Kiles ranks 17th nationally in the pole vault with a clearance of 5.26 and is expected to win the pole vault. Sophomore Stefan Amokwandoh has had a terrific season in the triple jump and ranks 25th nationally. The Tigers have won the last six triples at HYP. with a 15.54. Senior Chris Cook's throw of 18.30 in the shot put ranks him 18th in the country and he should do well as he's the only athlete of the three teams to hit 18 meters. Sophomore Adam Kelly boasts the highest ranking of any Tiger in any event - as he is sixth in the weight throw with a bomb of 21.54.
The women's team have won the last two HYP's and have won 10 of 17 since 2000. Allison Harris holds the meet record in the pole vault and will look to retain the title again his year. Her record of 4.10 is just below her season best of 4.05 this season - which is the best mark of the three programs. With Julia Ratcliffe back in action, she looks to regain the weight throw title. She ranks 35th nationally at 19.33. Princeton won three middle distance events last year, the 500, 800 and 1,000 and that corps performed excellently the last time out at the Great Dane Invitational. The Tigers have also won the last two high jumps and long jumps at HYP.
