Princeton Extends Unbeaten Streak to Eight with Win Over Harvard
January 07, 2017 | Women's Ice Hockey
PRINCETON, N.J. (1/7/17) - The Princeton women's hockey team has been finding new ways to win seemingly every game during their current eight-game unbeaten streak. On the other side of things, Harvard has had tough luck in one-goal games this season.
Both of those trends continued today in snowy Princeton as junior Kiersten Falck's third period power-play goal gave the Tigers a 2-1 come-from-behind win at Hobey Baker Rink. Leading scorer Karlie Lund had a goal and an assist for the Tigers, while freshman goalie Steph Neatby recorded 32 saves while improving her record to 6-1.
Falck deposited a rebound off of Lund's shot from the slot into the Crimson net with 7:01 left in regulation and the Tigers (12-6-2, 8-4-1 ECAC, 4-2-1 Ivy) held on for their third straight win. Princeton is 7-0-1 over their current unbeaten streak and have not lost since falling 4-3 in overtime at Boston University on Nov. 26.
Harvard (1-10-2, 1-7-2 ECAC, 1-3 Ivy) came into today's game after tying No. 8 Quinnipiac last night and the Crimson gave Princeton all it could handle in the early going. With the exception of an early season weekend against ECAC leaders Clarkson and St. Lawrence, and a 3-0 loss at Cornell on Dec. 2, five of the Crimson's other six previous losses were by one goal, including four losses in overtime.
Harvard had several excellent scoring opportunities in the opening period but Neatby made several quality stops, including three consecutive stops on Harvard's Val Turgeon in the crease, to keep the game scoreless.
Princeton had back-to-back penalties in the second and after killing off the first Crimson power play were not as fortunate on Harvard's second opportunity. Sophomore defender Kaitlin Tse deflected a point shot from Briana Mastel for her first goal at 5:32 to give Harvard a 1-0 lead. Turgeon also assisted on the play.
The Harvard lead held up until the third period when Princeton's top line of Molly Contini, Lund and Carly Bullock - matched by Harvard's Turgeon, Haley Mullins and Sydney Daniels for much of the game - broke into the scoring column. Harvard senior goalie Molly Tissenbaum made a save on a shot by Contini but Lund was alone in front, scoring her team-leading 16th goal of the season to tie things at 1-1 at 4:38.
The Tigers were held off the scoreboard on their first four power-play opportunities but cashed in for what would prove to be the winning goal after Harvard received a penalty for interference with 8:20 left in the third.
Tissenbaum, who finished with 29 saves, made a tough stop on Lund from the slot but Falck was able to pounce on the puck just inside the face-off circle at the left side of the net and buried the puck for her fifth goal of the season.
With Tissenbaum pulled for an extra attacker Lund put a backhand shot from the neutral zone into the vacated net with 33 seconds left for what appeared to be an insurance goal but the play was ruled offside.
With the win the Tigers are now tied for second in the ECAC Hockey standings, along with St. Lawrence, with 17 points - though the Tigers have three more games in hand.
Princeton takes it streak on the road as it heads to Central New York next weekend to face Cornell and Colgate.
