PRINCETON, N.J. (10/14/17) - The Princeton men's cross country team brought its core five to the Princeton Invitational this morning and performed as expected, finishing in first place with 44 points and beat 16 teams on the line.
"We took our next logical step in our preparation for championship races," head coach Jason Vigilante said. "Throughout the season we have been patient and deliberate about our effort and today verifies we are well on our way. Noah and Conor were fantastic up front. Paulson and Garrett ran great and Ron Stone closed out well. We have a bunch of guys who will continue to develop and support those five. I'm very happy that today was our first day to run in spikes yet we have taken no pause in our training. We are moving straight ahead."
Senior Noah Kauppila and sophomore Conor Lundy went 3-4 in the race. Kauppila, a 12-time Ivy League Heps scorer, was also one of Princeton's solid top five last season and is looking to make his mark on championship season as he did in outdoor track last season. He clocked a time of 24:08.2 to take third this morning. Today marked Lundy's first cross country race of the season as he took fourth at 24:08.3. Last year he was third at Ivy League Heps and went on to run as an individual in the NCAA Championships.
Senior Garrett O'Toole placed 11th at 24:23.3 and has been a solid scorer all season. O'Toole has been the two-time Ivy League runner-up in the indoor mile and twice has qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the 1500.
Senior William Paulson, who was the runner up at Heps a year ago, ran well in his first cross country race of the season with a time of 24:25.0. A six-time scorer at Ivy League Heps, Paulson reached the NCAA Championship race in the 1500 last spring.
Senior Rob Stone was the final scorer at 24:28.9, finishing in 14th place. Steadily improving during his career, Stone is primed for his second shot at Ivy League Heps and has been a scorer for the Tigers all season.
Senior Wolfgang Beck and sophomore Viraj Deokar came in 20th and 23rd with times of 24:36.9 and 24:38.2, respectively.
The Ivy Heps will be held on Friday, Oct. 27 at Van Cortlandt Park. The men's 10k race is scheduled to being at noon.
