Volleyball Looks To Bounce Back, Opens Second Half Of Ivy Season At The Palestra
October 18, 2017 | Women's Volleyball
The Princeton women's volleyball team finds itself in different territory than it has become accustomed to as it enters the second half of the 2017 Ivy League season.
The Tigers, who have either shared or stood alone in first place every week from the end of the 2015 season through last weekend, suffered their first weekend sweep since early October of the 2015 schedule last weekend, and that dropped them into a share of second place with Harvard (5-2), one match behind Yale. The Tigers have dug out of deeper holes over the last three years — remember the 0-3 start two seasons ago? — but they also don't want to wait much longer to begin that process.
They'd rather just start it Friday night at the Palesta.
Princeton (10-5, 5-2) takes on Penn (8-8, 3-4) to open the second half of Ivy League play Friday night, a match that will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network. The Tigers have won four straight over the Quakers, as well as each of the last three meetings at the Palestra.
But that isn't the history at the forefront of their minds. This team is more concerned with shaking off the negative feelings from a tough trip through New York last weekend, when it dropped a 3-1 decision at Cornell and a 3-2 match at Columbia. For the first time all season, close sets were going the other way for a Princeton team that had won 15 of the first 17 Ivy League sets played this season.
Friday's match will feature the Ivy League's top two players in kills. Princeton sophomore Natasha Skov lead the Ivies with 3.47 kills per set, and she led the Tigers to a 3-0 win over Penn in the Ivy opener with 13 kills, while Penn freshman Parker Jones ranks second in kills with 3.38 per set. Jones had seven kills against Princeton, though the Tiger defense limited her to a negative hitting percentage for the night.
Following Friday's match, the Tigers will play four straight at home, a stretch that begins with an Oct. 27 showdown with Yale. All home matches will be streamed live on the Ivy League Network.
