Colvin Nets Game Winner as Tigers Top Big Red, 2-1
October 28, 2017 | Men's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. (10/28/17) - Junior Jeremy Colvin's fifth goal of the year in the 62nd minute gave Princeton its first Ivy League win of the season as the Tigers defeat Cornell 2-1 on Saturday night on Myslik Field.
The Big Red, who entered the game tied for second in the Ivy League standings, got on the board first in the 18th minute. The goal ends a Princeton string of 13 consecutive games without allowing a goal in the first half. Tommy Hansan was credited with his fifth of the season with a shot from 25 yards out.
Senior Harry Heffernan evened things up with his first tally of the season in the 26th minute. Senior Matthew Mangini took a free kick from the edge of the center circle at midfield and served the ball right into the 18-yard box, where Heffernan used his height to get a head on it first and knock it past goalkeeper Mitchell Meyer.
Mangini added his second assist of the night, setting up Colvin. He lofted a ball from midfield towards the goal and Meyer came out to play the ball with a kick but didn't sense the speed of Colvin who got his right foot on the ball and sent it into the open net.
Colvin and Michael Osei Wusu had a great chance to make it 3-1 in the 80th minute, as Colvin ditched his defender and fed Osei Wusu across the pitch but his shot was gobbled up by Meyer.
Princeton (4-6-4, 1-2-2 Ivy) was able to fight off to dangerous free kicks in the final three minutes, both taken by Tyler Bagley. Bagley's first attempt on the left side went over the man-mad wall and went off the left post as sophomore Jacob Schachner made a leaping effort towards it. Defender Henry Martin did a great job of clearing the ball away to prevent a chance on the right side. Bagley set up again a minute later but this time his shot went directly off of the Tigers' wall.
Schachner earned the win with five saves, while Meyer stopped five as well for Cornell (7-6-2, 2-2-1 Ivy).
Princeton hosts Drexel on Tuesday, Oct 31 at 7 p.m., in the final non-conference game of the season.
