February 12, 2017 | Women's Ice Hockey
A 40-save performance by freshman goaltender Steph Neatby earned Princeton two big points in the ECAC as the Tigers took down No. 3 St. Lawrence 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at Appleton Arena.
Princeton is now is fifth place in the ECAC standings with 26 points, just one behind Colgate and just one in front of Quinnipiac which lost at Clarkson today. Colgate has the tougher schedule in the final season of the regular weekend as they host the top two teams in the league in Clarkson and St. Lawrence. Princeton and Quinnipiac meanwhile will take on eighth-place RPI and 12th place Union at home. The Tigers will either get the final home-ice position, or be the fifth or sixth seed in the ECAC tournament.
The Tigers rallied from a two-goal deficit to score four straight to improve to 16-8-3 overall and 12-6-2 in the ECAC.
Senior Kelsey Koelzer had a three assist night, pushing her close to the 100-point plateau, as she know stands with 94 in her career. Freshman Carly Bullock scored twice and added one assist, and linemate Karlie Lund chipped in two assists.
The Hockey Commissioner's Association Rookie of the Month Neatby turned away 17 shots on goal in a scoreless first period, while Grace Harrison had an easier time facing just five shots on the other end.
The Saints quickly grabbed a 2-0 lead with goals within 1:18 of each other early in the second. With a face off to the right of Neatby, Kayla Nielson won the draw and fed Kayla Vespa. Dakota Golde tried her hand at Neatby and was denied on her attempt but jammed home her second attempt to get on the board at 5:32. Saints leading goal scorer Brooke Webster added to the lead at 6:14 when she banged in a rebound. After fighting for the puck in the corner Hannah Miller drew Neatby out to the right side and then Webster had an opening on the left to pop in the puck.
Koelzer did a great job on the forecheck to break a puck free in the left corner of Harrison and pushed the puck towards the crease where Bullock had time and room and deked across the paint and flipped the puck past Harrison to make it a one-goal game at 11:19.
The Tigers used the momentum of its power play late in the second to knot the game at 2-2 just one minute before the close of the middle frame. Just six seconds into their fourth power-play of the second period, Lund won the draw back to Koelzer at the right point and she slid it across the blue line for Claire Thompson who rifled a shot into to the back of the net.
Princeton had the edge in the third period and it was evidenced by an goal at 3:26 by Bullock – her 17th of the season. On the doorstep, she got her second poke to go on a Koelzer rebound with Molly Strabley earning the secondary assist.
With less than five minutes to play Neatby had a spectacular save on a odd-man rush with Kennedy Marchment. As a defender took a tumble, Marchment stick handled her way towards the goal, faked the near side and tried to go back door but was denied by the rookie.
Harrison, who finished with 26 saves, was pulled for the extra skater with 2:28 remaining and Marchment tried again. This time rifling a shot from the high slot but again Neatby turned it away.
Senior Molly Contini's ninth goal of the season put the icing on the cake as she had help from Lund and Bullock on the empty-net goal at 18:48.
