COLLEGE STATION, Texas (3/11/17) - Princeton's two competitors at the 2017 NCAA Indoor National Championships had successful days as senior Allison Harris was ninth in the pole vault while sophomore Adam Kelly was 10th in the weight throw - as each earned Second-Team All-America honors.
Harris finished ninth in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.20 (13-9.25) - making it over on her first attempt. She made it over the opening height of 4.05 (13-3.5) on her second attempt and sat in fourth place after the first round. She was one of 11 that cleared 4.20 – a mark only five pole vaulters would attain. Also bowing out at that height was reigning indoor champion and outdoor champion Lexi Weeks (Arkansas).
Lakan Taylor (Alabama) won the event with a 4.45 (14-7.25).
This indoor season Harris set the Princeton and Ivy League record in the event with a 4.27 (14-0). She was the Ivy Heps champion and the Mid-Atlantic Field Athlete of the Year. Harris is the first Princeton pole vaulter to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Kelly finished 10th in the weight throw at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in College Station this afternoon.
Competing in his first indoor championships, Kelly was just one place out of ninth place, as the top nine advanced for three more throws.
Kelly threw 21.13 (69-4) on his first attempt and after the first round was in seventh place. He fouled on his second attempt. Kelly had no improvement on his third round throw after hitting 21.08 and was in ninth place after that toss. He was just edged at the end of that round by Joseph Ellis (Michigan) at 21.37 – missing the top nine by .24 meters (9.5 inches).
With his 10th-place finish, Kelly earns second-team All-America honors. Kelly was an honorable mention All-America in the hammer throw last spring when he took 14th. The fifth Tiger to compete in the national championships in the event, Kelly finishes his indoor season with a PR of 22.62 (74-2.50).
Johnnie Jackson (LSU) won the event with a throw of 22.88 (75-0.75).
Princeton's outdoor season will get underway in just two weeks, as the men's squad competes at the Penn Challenge on March 25, while the women's team will be at the North Florida Invite on March 24.
