March 12, 2017 | Baseball
GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Princeton Tigers could not earn a series victory, dropping a 12-3 decision to the UNC Greensboro Spartans at UNCG Baseball Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The two teams split the four-game set.
Conor Nolan had two hits and two RBI to pace the Tigers' offense while Asher Lee-Tyson scored a run. Ryan Smith struck out three hitters in 1 2/3 innings of relief.
After a sacrifice fly gave UNC Greensboro a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Tigers opened up with a three-run third inning. After Lee-Tyson singled and Chris Davis was hit by a pitch to start the at-bat, Danny Baer laced single up the middle to tie the contest at 1-all. Two batters later, Conor Nolan knocked in two with a single to left field, giving the Tigers a 3-1 advantage.
The Spartans rattled off a six-spot in the bottom half of the third. A hit-by-pitch and two-run double gave the home team the lead, 4-3, with one out. Two hitters later, a fielding error added two more tallies while a run-scoring single finished the scoring in the inning.
In the sixth, three straight hits for the Spartans including two-run triple from Cesar Trejo pushed their lead to six. A sacrifice fly, one batter after, gave UNC Greensboro its 10th run. The home team amassed two more tallies in the seventh frame.
Princeton continues its road trip next week at Maryland for a three-game series (Mar. 17-19). First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 4 p.m.
