Henderson, Cook, Cannady, Weisz Earn NABC All-District Honors
March 22, 2017 | Men's Basketball
Mitch Henderson is the NABC UPS All-District 13 Coach of the Year, senior Steven Cook is on the NABC All-District 13 first team, and sophomore Devin Cannady and senior Spencer Weisz are on the all-district second team, the NABC announced Wednesday.
The NABC recognition is the first for any of the Tiger honorees, and District 13, which includes the Ivy League and the Patriot League, had six of the 10 spots go to Ivy Leaguers.
The honors come at the conclusion of a season that saw Princeton finish 23-7, make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011, win its first Ivy League title since 2011 and its first outright title since 2004, finish 14-0 in the Ivy for the first time since 1998, and win the inaugural Ivy League Tournament to go 16-0 against Ivy League teams.
Henderson, the Ivy League Coach of the Year, became the program's third-winningest coach all-time, behind only Pete Carril, for whom he played during Carril's last two seasons in 1994-95 and 1995-96, and Franklin C. "Cappy" Cappon, for whom the men's basketball head coaching position is named. Princeton's 23 wins were the most since 2011, when the Tigers went 25-7 the year before Henderson became the team's head coach. Henderson is also the only person in Ivy League history to both play for (1997, 1998) and serve as head coach for (2017) 14-0 Ivy teams.
Cook, a first-team All-Ivy Leaguer, an Ivy League all-tournament team member, an Allstate NABC Good Works Team honoree and the program's first CoSIDA Academic All-America since 1998, led the team in scoring at 13.6 points per game, was second on the team in rebounding at 5.1 per game, and was tops in the Ivy in steals per game at 1.6. He finished his career 15th in Princeton history in scoring at 1,148 points.
Weisz, the Ivy League Player of the Year, finished as the only Tiger in program history with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 300 assists and 200 3-pointers, ending his career 12th all-time in points (1,241), eighth in rebounds (605), second in assists (383) and fifth in 3-pointers (209). This season, he was fourth on the team in scoring at 10.9 points per game while leading the team in rebounds, at 5.4 per game, and assists, at 4.2 per game.
Cannady, an honorable mention All-Ivy League, was second on the team in scoring at 13.4 points per game and led the team with 81 3-pointers, fifth most in a season at Princeton. Just two years into his career, Cannady is already 14th in program history in 3-pointers made at 138. The Ivy League leader, Cannady set a Princeton record for free throw percentage in a season among Tigers with at least 40 attempts, going 76 of 81 for a .938 clip. Cannady will enter his junior season with 740 career points.
