Heavyweights Post Perfect Morning In Home Opener vs Georgetown
March 25, 2017 | Heavyweight Rowing
The Princeton heavyweights opened their 2017 season in impressive style Saturday morning, winning all three of their morning races on Lake Carnegie against Georgetown.
The annual season-opening scrimmage began with a dominant effort by the Tiger 1V, which is building off a silver performance at the 2016 Sprints, as well as a bronze at IRAs. Princeton got out early on Georgetown and had control of the race by the midway point. The Tigers cruised to victory in 5:49.7, nearly 15 full seconds faster than the Hoyas.
The second varsity, which won silver at both Sprints and IRAs, also had a strong 2017 debut. The Tigers were also in control throughout, winning by more than 33 seconds in a time of 5:54.2. The third varsity, which went undefeated last year and won gold at both Sprints and IRAs, also earned a win in 5:59.7. The most impressive note in that race, and a testament to the depth in the heavyweight program, is that both the Princeton 4V and 5V also earned a win over the Georgetown 3V.
"I was pleased with the way that our entire team stepped up today for our first race of the season," head coach Greg Hughes said. "It was a solid start and it gave us a good feel for what to work on this coming week as we gear up for what's next."
The home-heavy Princeton schedule continues next weekend, as the Tigers will race Navy in its first Cup competition of the season. The Navy-Princeton Rowing Cup will be on the line April 1 at 9 am, and you can watch it live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
"The first victory is a great confidence builder to have under our belts, but we have to remember that it is still early March," D'Agostino added. "We still have a lot to work on so that we can hit peak speed come the big races in May and June."

"We had a really solid start and shift to base," said senior Franco D'Agostino. "The offseason has been long, but we've had strong results this winter that show the team's depth. Across all boat classes, everyone is especially excited to get back on Carnegie given that so many of our races are home."It was a strong opener for the Princeton heavyweights, who defeated Georgetown by open water in their 2017 debut on Lake Carnegie. pic.twitter.com/H2mgpEjJOA
