Heavyweights Open Cup Season Saturday, Host Midshipmen For Navy-Princeton Rowing Cup
March 30, 2017 | Heavyweight Rowing
Coming off a strong performance in their season opener against Georgetown, the Princeton heavyweights will open a month full of Cup competitions Saturday morning when they take on the Midshipmen for the Navy-Princeton Rowing Cup. The regatta is slated for a 9 am start (5V), with races happening every 15 minutes until the 1V showdown at 10 am. Princeton retained the Cup by over nine seconds last year, and it has won each of the four meetings since this rivalry was renewed in 2013. The full schedule is below, and you can watch it live on the Ivy League Digital Network.
For David Bewicke-Copley, the lone freshman in the 1V last weekend, it will be another first in his collegiate career.
"Before the Georgetown race I felt as I would imagine the Portuguese explorer Lourenço de Almeida felt as he ventured into the Sri Lankan wilderness back in the 15th Century," said Bewicke-Copley. "Ebullient and effervescent yet solicitous and conscious of the task at hand; similar to the emotions encountered when approaching the challenge of removing a precarious block from a teetering Jenga tower. As our first race of the season, the challenges were different to any races I'd be part of in the past as we were just focused on laying down solid foundations to work off as we develop throughout the racing calendar and I think we did that well."
It wasn't his first experience with top-level racing. Bewicke-Copley won a silver medal with the Great Britain M8+ at the 2016 U23 World Championships in Rotterdam, and he was a gold medalist in the Princess Elizabeth Challenge Cup at the 2016 Henley Royal Regatta. Still, there was a learning curve for him as he made his collegiate debut.
"The biggest challenge so far has been marking myself out from the rest of this deep group enough to be selected into the crew I want to be a part of," Bewicke-Copley said. "My biggest focus is just keeping my head down and reminding myself that what other teams do has no bearing on the quality of our racing or training, and so to not give them any respect by paying attention to them."
The weekend will continue the growth of the remaining four boats, each of which had good performances last weekend, against a Navy squad making its spring debut. Saturday's race will also lead the Tigers into the heart of their season, with historic Ivy rivalries the four races afterwards.
