No. 8 Princeton Falls in ECAC Semifinals to No. 3 Clarkson, 4-0
March 04, 2017 | Women's Ice Hockey
The ECAC Goalie of the Year Steph Neatby made 36 saves, but Neatby and the Tigers couldn't find an answer for Loren Gabel, as she scored twice and assisted on two other goals to lift No. 3 Clarkson to a 4-0 win over No. 8 Princeton in the ECAC semifinals on Saturday.
After a scoreless first period, Clarkson (28-4-5) took a 1-0 lead into the second intermission before scoring three in the third.
"Clarkson played like they were the No. 3 team in the country today," Princeton head coach Jeff Kampersal said. "We gave them too many second-chance opportunities. We took three penalties during our own power play, and that didn't help. We started playing Princeton Hockey when they scored their first goal. Overall, the coaches are proud of our team, especially the seniors. They left it all out there."
Neatby made 13 saves in the first period to keep it scoreless, as Clarkson had a 13-6 advantage in shots on goal.
Ella Shelton finally was able to get one by Neatby early in the second, finding just the right amount of space. Gabel came skating through the neutral zone and fed Shelton at the top of the left circle, and Shelton squeezed the puck between the left pipe and the blocker of Neatby to make it 1-0 at 2:31.
Senior Kelsey Koelzer had an opportunity to tie it up after she split her defenders down the middle and fired on net, but Shea Tiley was there to stop the blast. Seniors Molly Contini and Cassidy Tucker also had chances in the second period. Contini's was off a Molly Strabley rebound with 14:47, while Tucker tested the glove of Tiley from the right circle.
As Princeton (20-10-3) took two straight penalties in the second, Neatby was solid, making a big save on Genevieve Bannon and a point-blank shot by Gabel, as the second ended with Clarkson up 1-0.
Gabel made it 2-0, 58 seconds into the third period on a quick transition, back handed goal at the right pipe.
The Tigers never relented as Contini forced Tiley to make a big save, and Kiersten Falck had a rebound opportunity. Koelzer also had a low hard shot padded away by Tiley.
The ECAC Player of the Year Cayley Mercer pushed the game a little out of reach for the Tigers. She cut across the slot and wristed in the team's third goal at 11:49. Gabel added the fourth goal at 15:14.
Tiley finished the game with 26 saves, as Clarkson outshot Princeton 40-26.
Clarkson was 0 for 5 on the power play, while Princeton was 0 for 4.
Clarkson advances to the ECAC Championship tomorrow.
