#8 Princeton Tops Columbia, Clemson To Open Tough April Road Stretch
April 01, 2017 | Women's Rowing - Open
Coming off an impressive win in its season opener over both Brown and Michigan State, eighth-ranked Princeton continued its early-season push with Saturday morning wins over both Columbia and Clemson on Overpeck Lake.
Each of Princeton's NCAA boats moved to 4-0 on the seasons with convincing margins. The varsity eight finished the course in 7:19.2 to win by just under 40 seconds, while the second varsity eight finished in 7:57.5 to win by more than 14 seconds.
The varsity four finished the Overpeck course in 9:02.6 to win by 15.5 seconds, and the V4B won by more than 28 seconds in 9:10.4.
"Our biggest focus building off of last week revolved around trusting our race plan and really emphasizing the third five hundred," said Ciara Nutter, the 4V stroke. "With whatever punches our next race would bring us, we wanted to be able to remain calm and work effectively as a unit. This past week reinforced our concentration on using each practice as an investment for the race."
This moves the Tigers into a very challenging two-week stretch, which starts next Saturday on the Charles River when Princeton faces #11 Harvard and Cornell for the Class of 1975 Cup. The following week, the Tigers will head to the Housatonic River to face #5 Yale for the Eisenberg Cup; both are currently scheduled to be streamed on the Ivy League Digital Network.
"Last year our team barely had any away races so this season poses an interesting change," Nutter said. "Today's race at Columbia tested that and really ironed out how we need to approach racing away from home. Racing away makes us a stronger team and ultimately our Ivy League Champs is away so the more practice we get racing on courses we don't know puts us one step closer to achieving our goals. The key to an effective road team requires being able to roll with the punches, but also being able to plan for any punches that may come our way."
