Columbia Holds Off Princeton in Doubleheader
April 21, 2017 | Baseball
PRINCETON, N.J. - The Columbia Lions collected two Ivy League victories over the Princeton Tigers at Clarke Field on Friday afternoon. The Lions held off the Tigers, 6-4, in game one and picked up a 5-4 decision in game two.
Columbia 6, Princeton 4
Nick Hernandez had three hits for the Tigers while Cody Phillips added two more from the bottom of the order. Eli Kimbell struck out four hitters in 2 2/3 innings of relief work.
Phillips created the game's first run as he doubled down the left field line, scoring Joseph Flynn in the second inning, but Columbia countered in the next frame. With two out, Randell Kanemaru singled through the left side, allowing Julian Bury to touch home. Kyle Bartelman followed with a run-scoring single that scored Kanemaru, giving the Lions a 2-1 advantage.
In the fourth stanza, Columbia had six consecutive singles, leading to four runs. During that stretch, the Lions had seven hits, leaving three runners on base, but took a 6-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, Princeton got a rally together with two out. After a Phillips' single put runners on the corners, David Harding ripped a double to center, tallying two for the Tigers, getting them within three (6-3). The next hitter, Asher Lee-Tyson, came through with a single up the middle to get Harding around the bases, making the Ivy contest, a 6-4 affair.
Kimbell got into trouble in the sixth as he allowed a walk and two singles to load the bases with no out. The freshman pitcher escaped the jam with a strikeout, pop up and fly out to keep Princeton within striking distance.
In the Tigers' last at-bat, Lee-Tyson began with a walk. Two batters later, Hernandez singled to put runners on first and second with one out. A ground out advanced the two runners up a base before Zack Belski was hit by a pitch. Columbia's reliever, Harrison Egly, got a fly out to preserve the victory for the Lions. Five different players for Columbia had multi-hits.
Columbia 5, Princeton 4
Phillips had a career-high four hits as did Harding while the two combined for three runs scored. Chad Powers struck out a season-best seven hitters in seven innings, but earned a tough loss in his second straight quality start.
The Tigers had the first runner reach second base in the first stanza, but couldn't get him home. Princeton loaded the bases with two out in the second stanza, but a strikeout completed the frame.
Powers retired the first six hitters he faced before a throwing error in the third, but that runner was thrown out stealing. Columbia had another batter get on base via an error in the fourth, but nothing came of it.
After Princeton stranded another runner in scoring position in the bottom of the fourth, Columbia got its first hit in the top of the fifth, but that runner was later erased on a double play.
In the top of the sixth, Shane Adams began the Columbia half with a single and then stole second. He moved to third base on a foul out and scored the game's first run on a ground out. The Lions tacked on an insurance run on a RBI double from Bartelman in the seventh.
Princeton began the seventh with back-to-back singles from Phillips and Harding. Lee-Tyson's sacrifice bunt pushed them up a base, while Hernandez followed with a deep fly out to center field that let Phillips scamper to the plate.
Chandler Bengtson launched a three-run home run in the top of the ninth to put Columbia in front, 5-1. Princeton fought back one more time as it opened up with back-to-back doubles to start its last at-bat. Lee-Tyson then brought everyone home, including himself, as he buried a pitch over the left-field fence, setting the score at 5-4. Belski kept the rally alive with a hit, but a fly out finished off the Tigers.
