April 27, 2017 | Women's Water Polo
PRINCETON, N.J. – The No. 9 Princeton Tigers travel to Indiana this weekend, seeking to capture a Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) title.
The No. 2 seeded Tigers will take on the No. 7 seeded Bucknell Bison on Friday at 1:30 p.m. The winner of that contest battles the winner of No. 3 Hartwick and No. 6 Brown on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Championship match is on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
Last season, Princeton finished third at the CWPA Championship. The Tigers defeated the host, Harvard Crimson, 12-8, before falling to eventual champion, Michigan, 9-8. The team rebounded with a 17-10 victory over Hartwick in the third-place game.
Earlier this year, Princeton defeated Bucknell, 9-3, on Apr. 1. Unfazed by her streak of six consecutive hat streaks coming to an end earlier in the day, Haley Wan buried five goals to tie her personal record vs. the Bison.
Princeton's defense was lights out to open the contest as it held the Bison without a goal in the first quarter. The Tigers, in front 1-0, outpaced Bucknell, 3-2, in the second frame and took a 4-2 advantage into halftime. Bucknell was kept off the scoreboard again, in the third quarter, while Princeton added three more goals, going in front, 7-2, putting the game away.
The Tigers are 40-8 overall all-time vs. Bucknell. The Bison took a close 10-9 decision last season, but prior to that Princeton won nine consecutive games. In the five career games vs. Bucknell, Ashleigh Johnson has allowed just 14 goals.
Head coach Luis Nicolao's unit opened the 2017 campaign with 12 wins, the third best start in program history. No. 6 Arizona State Sun Devils ended the Tigers' perfect start with a 7-6 decision on Mar. 18.
After a 5-2 California trip, the Tigers continued CWPA play with two wins before a 14-6 loss to No. 7 Michigan on Apr. 2. Princeton rebounded by reaching the 20-win milestone with two victories, defeating the No. 14 Indiana Hoosiers, 10-6, and the Brown Bears, 11-8. It's the fifth time in the last six years that the Tigers has won at least 20 games. The Tigers completed the regular season with victories over No. 17 Hartwick and George Washington.
CWPA All-Conference first team player, Haley Wan, has had an extraordinary season to date as she has registered 12 hat tricks in her last 13 games. She sits with 63 tallies, the 12th most in a single-season in program history. The junior showed an all-around game as she swiped 34 passes, collected 30 assists and drawn 25 ejections.
Six different players have amassed at least 20+ goals this season including Chelsea Johnson who scored a career-high 39 tallies. Lindsey Kelleher has recorded 12 goals over her last seven games and sits with 26 goals and 32 assists along with 25 steals. Morgan Hallock led the team with 69 drawn ejections and added 28 goals and 17 steals.
