June 19, 2017 | Men's Basketball
Dan Mavraides '11 and former Director of Basketball Operations Craig Moore competed for the U.S. team in the FIBAÂ 3-on-3 World Cup in Nantes, France this week, making the semifinals after winning the U.S. title in April.
Twenty nations from around the world qualified a team to the World Cup event, and the U.S. finished second in a pool with the Netherlands, Indonesia, New Zealand and South Korea. Mavraides and crew defeated Indonesia (21-8), New Zealand (21-6) and South Korea (21-4) while falling to the Netherlands (19-12).
The fourth-seeded U.S. team then advanced to Wednesday's eight-team single-elimination round before battling top-seeded Serbia, which swept its pool against Egypt, Russia, Andorra and Puerto Rico, to a 17-15 defeat. The Serbians then went on to win the title, defeating the fifth-seeded Netherlands 21-18.
Mavraides was a 1,000-point scorer at Princeton and helped the team to the 2011 Ivy League title. Moore, who played under Princeton head coach Mitch Henderson '98 at Northwestern where Henderson was an assistant coach, served as the Tigers' Director of Basketball Operations during the 2014-15 season. They are playing alongside Lehigh alum Zahir Carrington and Brown alum Damom Huffman for the event. The team is backed by John Rogers '80 and his Ariel Investments firm.
